Listening to the broken skull podcast with him and Austin. In 1999 after doing the job at No Mercy and getting his money from Vince. Was there any buzz online at the time about Double J jumping back to WCW?
Did the internet or the casual fan knew he was jumping ship after the show? Or was it a guarded secret when he debuted and smashed Bagwell over the head.

Yes, the WWF website announced the Friday before the PPV that Jarrett was leaving and going to WCW.
Two weeks earlier, the website announced Vince Russo had taken a job with WCW. This was the post the WWF put up by 11:00 PM the night Russo quit.

I remember watching Nitro during a commercial during RAW and was shocked when Jef Jarrett debuted smashing a guitar over the head of Buff Bagwell
especially after he wrestled Chyna the night before

Also after a Smackdown broadcast in October 1999, WWOR in Seacaucus, NJ on their 10p newscast had a story about Jeff jumping ship. I’m serious. I guess they figured that since wrestling was so popular and Smackdown was their most popular show, they figured they would tell a story on their newscast about it.

Back in that era there was honestly nothing more exciting than when somebody switched brands

Was it really Ross' fault?

Was it really Ross' fault? Yes and no. It WAS Jim's fault that Jarrett's contract expired while he was champion because he forgot until it was almost too late. But Jeff was always WCW-bound; there was nowhere higher on the card for him in WWF and at the time Steve Austin was actively refusing to work with him so if he wanted to get ahead he had to jump ship.

I was personally excited cause I enjoyed the madness that was WCW at the time. And I thought they could use him. But I don’t remember a lot of people caring in the iwc at the time.

It just amazes me that JR forgetting to check Jarrett's contract expiration ended up changing wrestling history for the next 23 years.

Speaking of that, Jarrett's stories about Austin are interesting for sure. He openly admitted he never had an issue with Steve not wanting to work a program with him, but he does always point out "he never complained when the angle was he came out and gave me a stunner"

Was it really Ross' fault? Essentially yes. When Jeff told the story on his podcast, he tried to talk about his contract several times with JR and basically got radio silence. And that was both in terms of negotiating his new contract (Jeff wanted more money generally - I believe he said his contract was for 250K a year) and getting paid back money he felt he deserved (he thought JR was shortchanging him on the money that went beyond his base pay - he saw the money he got to drop the title to Chyna as money he was already owed). So Jeff took this to mean that they didn't want him and decided to go to WCW (which offered a better deal). JR did mistakenly let his contract expire before they took the belt off of him as well.

Not really. I mean even in 1999 I don't anyone considered Jarrett a top 20 talent in the world, and WCW was already on it's downward spiral, so unless they got Austin or Rock, then I don't think any signings was going to get anyone animated, and even then I don't know if that gets any major eyes back on WCW considering look how successful WWF was while Austin was out.

Jarrett jumping only is notable because he got all his cash out of Vince before he f***ed off. Had his contract expired Monday, instead of Saturday, no one would even remember it happened.
Plus, the finish of that match was bullshit anyway.
