I know we may never officially know, but who would you say wanted him on the show? I would think Vince was a bit preoccupied and Art was nearing retirement age from football when Vince was maybe probably still a teenager. Gorilla didn't even know who he was. I would say he was a Jim Ross choice but I'm pretty sure this was the time period when Jim was let go. Has Bruce ever commented on Art or the show?
It was an awful threesome for a PPV. You had Gorilla who was like 55 and acted like he was 70, Art was 70 and acted like he was 90, then Macho Man who was 40, acted like he was a 60 year old pretending to be 40 pretending to be 30.
Having lived in the Baltimore area and met Art many times, including at his house, I can see he didn't even remember the PPV and says he never met Vince McMahon though it didn't seem as if he knew who he was. Art's whole life was football, family and Baltimore just as much as Vince's life has been WWF/WWE.

Was KOTR 94 the show Vince missed due to the trial? If so probably Bruce or Pat. On STWW Bruce there was more heat on Randy for getting flustered and responding to stuff then there was on Art.

Had the show been an hour longer, I'm convinced Art Donovan would have known the exact weight of every person in the audience.

IIRC Art Donovan had something of a career resurgence on some espn football show saying dumb stuff around that time frame. That is likely how he got the gig.

I mean if they had him do one match, it wouldn't have been so bad. To me it's a rough listen as Monsoon and Savage try to call matches around Art.

I am just confused why they felt having him out there as long as he was made sense. Like one or two matches, sure, but having a guest commentator the whole show who had never called wrestling before is a recipe for disaster.

They did an entire episode of STWW on KOTR 94 a few years ago.
All I remember from the STWW episode is Bruce saying that Vince, who was watching from home called Bruce laughing his ass off at how bad the commentary was. This is Bruce talking so it's most likely B.S., but who is left to say anything different?
On a side note I watched this ppv live with my best friend at the time. Neither of us were offended or thought the commentary was anything extra terrible. It was different obviously and we had no idea who Art was. I was surprised when I discovered online message boards years later how badly his commentary was received. I personally was far more offended with the Piper vs Lawler main event that I was really excited for and was probably the first match I ever saw where afterwards I was thinking, "that wasn't very good."

KOTR 94's commentary is one of the best things about it. Art being clueless, and Monsoon and Savage slowly becoming more and more annoyed with him entertains me to no end. But that's just me, I can understand why other fans hated it, but I'll always love it.

As a Brit I had no idea who he was, but it turns out that people outside of Baltimore might not have known either!
I can’t remember the match, but I do recall either Gorilla or Savage letting out an audible exhale of frustration as Art continued being Art. I think if Vince had been there, he would have been ‘politely removed’ from proceedings about two matches in.

I think if Vince had been there, he would have been ‘politely removed’ from proceedings about two matches in. I was at the 2003 football hall of fame induction weekend and Art was part of a big autograph session with previous hall of famers. All these years later I remember a fan telling his friend who was in the autograph session and one of the names he said was "Archie Donovan." I can't imagine Vince laughing about Art unless he had so much other stuff on his mind, this took it off his mind. Art was ruining his PPV. You can't not know Vince's superstars and Vince find it acceptable.

"How much does this guy weigh?" "250 pounds Art." "And how much does the big guy weigh?" "500 pounds plus Art." "Well that's not fair, the other fella only weighs half the amount."

It's so weird they didn't just gave him come out and wave to the crowd as the people in the building were the only ones who could have possibly cared-- and even then, it'd had to have been a small percentage of those folks.
Art has been retired since 1963, and the Colts hadn't even been in Baltimore since 1984.
So you had people of drinking age that would have grown up their entire lives in Baltimore that would have no connection to that team, let alone a guy who retired over 30 years prior.
