Got a wrestling version, so what the hey.... "October 1997-March 1998 was Game Show Network's DARK PERIOD!" (Wonder who came up with that nickname and what happened to him?) Actually thinking about Buzzr's new "double shots all day, now with less Press Your Luck and other fan faves" and then thinking about this got me to thinking about this topic. Anyway, compared to other GSN schedules we had it easy with this one, despite the lack of Mark Goodson shows. Check it out. groups.google.com/g/alt.tv.game-shows/c/t1G22s2n6Mc/m/jO48M_eeHl0J?hl=en And I'd certainly take it over All Steve Harvey, All The Time.

Have to say, the outrage over Heath Ledger as Joker turned out to be ridiculous to everyone once the first trailer hit. Remember how disparagingly people talked about him and calling him the Brokeback Mountain guy. Really eye rolling in hindsight.

Every single time it comes up I admit to being one of these guys so people can see that yes, even relatively normal people got this one wrong. I was SURE he would suck as Joker. Absolutely positive. A Knights Tale is one of my favorite movies, and I was like "Oh sure, the floofy haired good boy from that is gonna be Joker. Okay."

I did think "Brokeback Batman" was funny though.

I think the casting of established characters is often one of those that gets overblown. Whenever someone that doesn't seem like a natural fit gets cast people assume it will be bad but there are plenty of cases where it's worked out as long as it was a quality actor.
Thinking about the Heath Ledger example got me thinking about the first Tim Burton Batman and looking at his filmography before Batman I have to wonder what the reaction would have been to Keaton's casting if we had today's internet back then. Sure he had Beetlejuice under his belt but even that doesn't make you think he'd be a great fit and his other previous roles didn't make him seem like a natural fit for the role.

I wasn't really plugged into that stuff at the time, really the first casting controversy that I remember being aware of at the time was when some people didn't like Matt Damon being cast as Jason Bourne.

Carrying on the Joker theme, much of the internet was getting hot and bothered about the Phoenix movie being some sort of bible for incels and it merely turned out to be an above average Scorsese homage with an outstanding leading performance.

Yeah, I would agree that all of it usually is, but I will pick one and say the James Rolfe backlash over that f***ing Ghostbusters remake. Framing him as being sexist simply because he didn't want to see the remake was pathetic. I lost all respect for Patton Oswalt with that whole situation. Oswalt straight-up bullied him over a meaningless video.

Pretty much Bridesmaids in GB's body, with its actresses doing the same thing. But yeah...I don't know who started the gender issue, but again..yeah! A lot of the "raped my childhood" whines as well. Yeah there's bad movies based on beloved IPs, and they can be downright infuriating at times. But there's disliking bad movies and being melodramatic about it. (didn't Transformers fans threaten Michael Bay's life, for instance, back in the day?) I see the Star Wars prequels are being seen more favorably now, on the other hand.

I see the Star Wars prequels are being seen more favorably now, on the other hand. I was super excited to see Ep 1 in the theater. My wife even made an event out of taking me to see it. I was......kinda meh about it. I saw some interesting potential, actually liked the politics aspect of the film, and thought most of the leads were pretty good in their roles. Jar Jar was a bit much and if I had a say I would have insisted that Anakin start out at an older age than Jake Lloyd was (a teenaged Anakin who was starting to learn on his own how to use certain Force powers like enhanced reflexes and a rudimentary form of mind trick to help himself and his mother survive as the lowest of the low on Tatooine would have been preferable to me, plus the awkward exchanges with Padme could have been infinitely more interesting as lame attempts to flirt). As time wore on and more of the films came out there definitely were plenty of good amongst the not-as-good, which is why all of the media that expands on that time period has been received positively. There's enough good there to expand upon.

To be fair he was in A Knight's Tale, Brokeback Mountain, and 10 Things I Hate About You. I've never seen A Knight's Tale, but the other two were good movies and he did a great job in them. If you looked at him from those movies and thought he was going to be The Joker, you wouldn't think it would work. I didn't think it was going to work at all, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Some people were really upset about Daniel Craig being cast as Bond. First one I thought of when I saw the thread title. In my opinion he's the best Bond.
