Watching the match for the first time this morning , Goldberg’s WWE PPV debut (sorry premium live event ) - loved Hollywood Rock as a heel with Lawler being a ham on the mic.
Question for all - would you have had Rock as Goldberg’s first feud , or someone else? And did you like the match ?

I think it was booked as well as you could have done it
Rock on his way out the door made himself look like a total bitch against Goldberg and for Goldberg to basically smoke him after Rock conquered his demons against Stone Cold at Mania says a lot

A match that big taking place at Backlash was strange but it was really the only possible time to do it with Rock's schedule.
The match was fine. I think Rock's selling and antics in that match were a little over the top though, bordering on Michaels/Hogan levels. I found them entertaining but if the goal was to get Goldberg over I think he should have toned it down a little. Fans seemed to be more laughing at how over the top Rock was acting rather than marvelling at what a monster Goldberg is.

That is an interesting comparison to the Michaels/Hogan SummerSlam match- do you think the Rock can get away with his "over the top" acting compared to HBK due to him being a hollywood heel at that moment?

Rock and Goldberg are friends. Rock was key in convincing him to come to WWE in 2003 to work a program with him and in fact if a deal had been agreed a little earlier they were going to do the match at Wrestlemania 19 instead. So I don't think anyone thought Rock was trying to sabotage Goldberg with his over-acting. He was just trying to be entertaining. Michaels though obviously had a reputation for being difficult and the combined political maneuverings of him and Hogan made it a headache behind the scenes, to the point that a planned rematch ended up not happening. Although personally I've never had a problem with Michaels in that match. If he was trying to sabotage the match I don't think his plan worked because it ended up being better than it probably would have been otherwise.

The term, "whisker biscuit" being used as a put down really stuck with me for some reason

It was fine. All felt strangely placid considering it was one of the biggest, most wanted matches ever. But from what Prichard has said, Rock had a huge hand in bringing whisker biscuits in.

I remember being fairly hyped for it, despite not really liking Goldberg, and not being into The Rock too much at that point either. However, I knew it was a big match. Then it happened and I thought it was.. alright. The rest of Goldberg's run, though, man it was crappy.

Remember Rock's weird ass promo at the PPV, before the match?

I get why they did it but it's a tough spot for Goldberg. He beats one of the biggest stars in wrestling history and then sort of spins his wheels in the midcard until Summerslam. Either start him with someone lower or move him quickly into the title picture.

Rock apparently thought it was going to suck and wanted to pivot to Mysterio

It made sense in that Hollywood Rock was due for a humiliation, and Goldberg destroying him was supposed to be funny, so the laughter wasn't an inappropriate response, I feel.
