August 2nd, 1992: Ron Simmons defeats Vader to become the WCW Champion. The first African American world champ in a major wrestling promotion like WCW.

Why did they edit out his theme song? I loved that song. Made that moment even cooler with all the faces celebrating and congratulating with that blaring through the arena.

Bearcat Wright and Bobo Brazil had won world titles, but this was definitely on a much grander scale, and with no dispute on if this one "counted" or not.
It's a shame that Ron Simmons himself had mixed feelings at best about it from what I recall, because absolutely it was a big moment, and it was some much needed variety in a world title scene that had gotten to be a bit of a rut of the same handful of people on top. It sucks they dropped him down the card after, with him leaving after seeing the writing on the wall. I get why he seems to think more highly of his WWE run where, yes, he wasn't a world champion, but he probably made much, much more money from being in the APA.

I think with Ron it was definitely worth a shot as ticked all the boxes you would want for a World Champion face. Well spoken, looked the part, carried himself well, was good in the ring. Problem was I just don't he was over enough for that spot. The pop he got when he won the title was enormous probably mainly because of the shock value and that it was just a really cool moment. However before that or after there wasn't anything about his crowd reactions that would indicate this guy should be World Champion. He was over but not super over.

Well, Ron Simmons had done it, The Doom partner had won it, With Taylor-Made clucking all the while, Sting's broken pair of ribs made us smile, While Cactus Jack lay concussed on the locker room tile.
We're talkin' rasslin', From Baltimore to Atlanta, Talkin' rasslin', Gordy and Zbyszko, Brad Armstrong's grotesquely swollen knee, Steve Austin and his run with the TV, We're talkin' Steiners, Ross and Schiavone.

I was so hyped for this when I was a kid. I actually was not a big Sting fan until later in his career, and Ron was my babyface of choice in WCW.

This was pretty big to me as a fan at the time. I bought Ron as a bad ass and was thrilled that he won the belt. The problem was that outside of Vader, there were no serious threats to him. He faced the Barbarian at Halloween Havoc, and no disrespect to Barb because he’s a tough son of a bitch with a long career, but he wasn’t a main event heel.
