I read that they had a match in 79 after looked around i couldn't find any footage so did this match ever really took place in the late 70s? And if so is there footage of it?

Bret wrote about it in his book. Just an untelevised squash. They might have wrestled more than once around that time, but Bret made it sound like a one time thing.

Would this would have been in Georgia after Hogan left Memphis but before he went to New York?

It did happen. Notable as Andre the Giant died shortly after.

It's a shame we didn't get a proper feud, but I think they were just cool kids who never had the time.

No, Hogan killed him with a body slam at Mania 3 in front of 90 billion fans, Jack. Metallica were at that gig as back up in case Aretha Franklin couldn't/wouldn't perform. They were in Awe of Hogan and figured he'd be the perfect replacement for their dead bassist. Hogan agreed to audition, but only if they collectively broke both his legs to prove he actually wanted the role. Lars and Kirk held Hogan down and James let loose with his Gibson Explorer, shattering the Hulkster's legs. The group expected Hogan not to audition.. .. he didn't.
