Hogan vs Flair should have been the WM 8 Match In a perfect world? Yes. Hogan vs Flair was the dream match of the 80s...hyped for years in various magazines. I used to salivate reading the fantasy matches of Flair vs Hogan, Flair vs Martel, or Martel vs Hogan. McMahon was way ahead of the curve on this issue. He figured out quickly (through house shows) that this is only a dream match on paper. It doesn't work in reality...their styles don't mesh. Sadly...and almost unbelievably, these matches were booked better here than they were later on in WCW. Hogan/Flair was really a case of 'too late'... for both of them. Had it been the main event of WrestleMania 4, for example, I think it might have been a different story. By '91, both of them were fully on the slide. Flair was stale as old bread. Hogan was eyeing Hollywood and starting to lose his steroid body. They were both wearing the belts mainly because their respective organizations couldn't come up with a better idea. Vince wasn't happy with Warrior wearing the belt and WCW failed to strike when the iron was hot and pass the torch to Luger in '89, probably because Flair was on the booking committee. By '94 it was even worse. They were both relics. Hogan was deeply insecure so he was that much less likely to give Flair anything. It was one step away from being one of those nostalgia matches featured on the first couple Slamborees. Of course, WCW was right to run with it, as I think it was their biggest box office to date.

I always wondered why he went back to WCW. By all accounts he was very happy and loved his time in WWF. Yeah they were going with younger guys into the new generation but they could have still used him as a nice fall back option to feud with Bret or turn face to feud with Shawn. Because he wasn’t happy. Vince was going to focus on his younger talent, Bret foremost but guys like Shawn as well. If Flair wasn’t at the top of the card, he had no interest in being there. Vince let him go, asking he lose to Perfect first and off he was to WCW to be back in main events. I suppose you’re right, but I wonder with hindsight being 20/20 if he would have gone back. He had a Rocky relationship with Bischoff didn’t he?

Hogan/Flair may have been the dream match, but Flair and Savage just clicked in every conceivable way.

This was actually my first introduction to Flair when I was a kid. He became one of my favorites because I was impressed how this older veteran guy was keeping up with the younger and bigger wrestlers. I thought it was funny how he acted like a wild teenager 85% of the time when his fancy entrance music and gear would indicate he was going to act more dignified and low key.
