Has the initial plan for this ever been revealed on Something to Wrestling with or any other podcast/shoot?
At the time, I felt having the Bushwackers and Men on a Mission portray Doinks was a neat little twist. I just know this was a last minute substitution since Matt Borne get let go a week or two before the PPV. But had Matt Borne stayed, I was always curious to know where they planned to go with this match.
Was it just going to be Borne along with three interchangeable clones portrayed by Steve Keirn, Steve Lombardi and whomever else they were using to carry on the imposter Doink trope at the time?

Presumably Ray Apollo was gonna be the forth Doink. As for the plans had Borne stayed... I don't know. I think his issues would have caught up with him regardless and the fact that the kliq wasn't a fan probably meant he would have a pretty low ceiling.

Steve Keirn was already doing indies as Doink by this point. Problems with Borne must have happened sometime in mid-October because Doink went to the USWA as part of the talent exchange and it was Lombardi in the role. At one point Meltzer speculated that Randy Savage was going to be part of the team since he wasn't booked but this makes no sense since he was in that feud with Crush. Having him show up dressed as Doink instead of trying to kill Crush would have been ridiculous.

I believe the decision to make Men on a Mission and the Bushwhackers the Doinks was made that day. In a shoot interview Mo said they didn't even know they were working until they got to the arena that day and told to go to makeup.
Leading in it came off like it was just going to be four interchangeable Doinks as that had been a big part of the gimmick since Wrestlemania.

With Borne it was probably meant to be four Doinks originally but with him out of the question it really doesn't make sense to have two teams that were so similar with being in masks or makeup (Knights, Doinks). It made sense to have MOM and Bushwhackers in makeup and it gave them a chance to get a PPV pay day. I was happy for them. The crowd chanted "we want Doink" because they knew how cool the Matt Doink was but probably better they did what they did because the new Doink wouldn't have the same edge as Matt. With that being said, Ray Apollo was a real Doink and for a longer time and it sucks when people crap on him in autograph signing announcements saying he was a fake Doink.

And why does Rick Bognar considered a fake Razor Ramon, while David Niven, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig are not viewed in the same regard as being fake James Bonds?

The best version of the team would have been original Borne Doink, plus Men on a Mission Doinks and an easily recognizable singles guy turned into another Doink. Looking at the roster and who was available, I'd say the best choices were Bob Backlund and Virgil, unless they wanted to trot out someone older or retired as a special attraction.

As an aside, Backlund as heel Doink is a goddamn beautiful thing to imagine. It's a fun game to think about what wrestlers could be given the heel Doink character and do something with it vs what wrestlers would just be a generic boring evil clown.

Not to mention he would have to shave his beard unless they were going to refer to him as Macho Doink which I’m sure he would have loved. (Note the sarcasm.)

I assume it would have just been like the Bushwhackers and Men on a Mission where you knew it was them in costumes and not Savage trying to pretend to really be Doink.

Ah were you following Tommy Fierro's Garden State Fair signings? Cause that happened a lot there. Is that people talking trash about Ray? I remember right after Matt died a few guys and Ray were doing an autograph signing for a car dealership. It was east coast regulars who were easy to deal with and fan friendly and all brought in by Eric Simms. People were complaining on Eric's facebook claiming it was a fake Doink and disrespectful to Matt's memory. Ray was a WWF employee as Doink, not some guy who got a suit made for the indys. He worked for WWF from late 1993 to early 1996, much longer than Matt. Sadly for Matt but good for Ray, Ray didn't have the issues that Matt had and could sustain a longer term job. Every once in a while someone brings in Ray for a signing, posts his actual picture (not one of Matt) and a few people talk trash.
