Speaking as someone who’s more of an Omega fan: can someone break down all of the details as to why it’s bad for me to root for Ospreay in a match again? His promo work is spotty admittedly, but outside that I feel he’s got great presentation and he’s damn fun to watch wrestle.

Most (but not all) problems people have with Ospreay pertain to him outside the ring.

Right, like in kayfabe, he is an egotistical asshole who RKO'd his (then) girlfriend to try to prove a point, something that was deeply unliked by Japanese crowds, it seemed. He also has always had a habit of talking shit on Twitter. I do kind of wonder if TJP and Ospreay are like some of the only reasons that United Empire are heels, given people love O-Khan and Cobb's built up a lot of momentum himself. As for the non-kayfabe answers, well, a lot of people can field that one.

As for the non-kayfabe answers, well, a lot of people can field that one. Yeah, this is only the non-kayfabe. The main complaints people would make: Number one is that UK women's wrestler Pollyana claimed to have been sexually assaulted by male wrestler Scott Wainright. He is close friends with Ospreay and she claimed that Ospreay and Bea Priestley (Blair Davenport) used their influence and connections in the UK scene to blackball her and keep her all shows in his defense/on his behalf. You can read an article about the claims etc here (for the interest of fairness, although I don't give him much lol it's very much against him but compiles the chronology): www.fanbyte.com/entertainment/wrestling/njpw-ignores-speaking-out-g1-climax-30/He's made quite a few MRA-esque Tweets like being miffed that men are always assumed guilty when accused of sexual assault (which many tie to the above accusation) and sarcastically wondering when Men's Appreciation Month is during Women's Appreciation Month. He asked his fans to crowdfund a new car for his mom. I can't speak to his financial situation at the time but it struck a lot of people the wrong way. This is verrrry low on the list of things to hold against him so take it with a grain of salt, but Blair started doing Manami Toyota's Japanese Ocean Cyclone Suplex as a finisher. Toyota got upset she was never asked for permission and Ospreay basically called her a dick. The reason Toyota was upset is that in her retirement match she passed it on to Tsukasa Fujimoto so felt it took away from that. At the end of the day that's sorta kid stuff and probably mostly my own miff lol. All in all it's sorta up to you with how comfortable you are cheering for him since some of it isn't like 110% proven. For instance a promotion came out and verified that they were contacted and told not to book Pollyana. A while after they Tweeted out a retract saying Ospreay never directly told them to not book her--which is weird because they never said he did, nor did Pollyana. But some people have taken that as a clearance on his accusations. I don't like him at all but this is all stuff people kinda have to figure out on their own. Personally I don't knock people for liking him all that much, (like I'm a Yoshiko fan/defender, I can definitely sympathize with being on the side of someone who comes under fire a lot lol) but even without liking him much in ring he can just be a dick.

Didn't want to make a new thread just for this point so think this is the best place to put it:
But so many people taking a subjective thing (Meltzer's star ratings) and making them an objective thing (a measuring stick/the gospel for determining who's better in ring) is the STUPIDEST thing in wrestling today, and that's saying something.
'Oh he has x 5-star matches' 'He's more 5 star matches than x,y and z combined' 'He's had more 5 star matches at this age than blah blah blah'
I hate seeing these type of comments online more than anything else. What's more, Dave doesn't even hold these ratings as anything more than a recommendation thing- he continually downplays their significance, yet they are brought up as the be-all end-all quantifier for in-ring ability. STOOPID. STOOPID. STOOPID. /orton

Ah, okay. All I wanted was some context on his controversies. Not trying to stan or get bothered by any of his critics.

I normally frown on backstage politics, but I'm really hoping Kenny is intentionally making ospray look like a goober on screen.

Kenny is definitely showing up to NJPW. If they’re setting up to do a match, Wrestle Kingdom is 4 months away. Should be enough time, both in kayfabe and in reality, to get back to 100%.
