I just bought my first home (closed the deal earlier this week, moving today). I've been a renter all my life, often with limited space for my own stuff. Now I'm in a four bedroom townhouse with a finished basement. I'm looking for tips on set up.
Right now I figure my bedroom will be strictly that, just a spot for my bed and clothes. I'll use one of the bedrooms as my computer room. The basement will be for the TV, Playstation and that fun stuff. I'll likely set up my laptop down there connected to the tv.
I was thinking the main floor could maybe be a space for tabletop gaming, board games, rpgs, miniatures and the like.
What it comes down to is I have vague ideas, but as a lifelong renter, I've never been big on setting up spaces other than a bedroom. Any suggestions? I'm in Canada if that helps. Back yard is your typical town house 10ft by 6ft roughly. Probably space for a table, a bbq and the like.
Right now all I've got is painting my bedroom a dark colour and getting blackout curtains because I work nights.
My furniture consists of an Armchair, 3 book cases, a computer desk, 2 computer chairs, a fold up chair and a fold up table and a bed. So, I'll be looking to buy some furniture as well. Oh and a tv and tv stand as well.

Paint helps make it yours too if you don’t like the colors.

Are you married? Do you think you will get married and want to stay in this home?
If so maybe leave some areas as untouched as you can. I bought a nice house in 2006, my soon to be wife moved in 2008. Then in 2019 I start to hear "This isnt our house, its your house" . When I lived there for 2 years by myself and 5 times that with her there.

As others have said, paint and pictures help.
Another change, albeit not inexpensive, is flooring. Replace carpet with new or luxury vinyl plank (looks like wood but durable asf).

Best advice I can give is to just slowly grow into the house, you don't need to fill it up with crap right away. Let the empty parts stay empty until you have something you want or need to do. I've been in my first home for about 5 years and I only just started making use of the last room when COVID started and I needed a home office (I'd previously been storing a used bed and a cat tree in it). My basement was almost completely empty for the first year or so too.

My basement was almost completely empty for the first year or so too. This! I love interior design, but I never design a room from scratch. I let it grow into my style, even if it takes a few years. You'll have or find some favorite pieces, most likely furniture, and go from there. I moved into my current apartment 1.5 years ago, my living/dining room started with a green sofa I fell in love with and a rustic round table. Just two pieces, but those have character and ultimately dictate what the whole room will look like once it's finished. So take your favorite pieces, ask yourself, ask them what they are about and how they relate to you - then give'em friends, allies, maybe some enemies. All those little things, artwork, memorabilia, plants, photos will fall into place down the line. You likely won't deliberately place it to feel right at home, but you'll one day notice that it's arbitrary placement works for you. So, give it time, let it breathe, but direct it.

be flexible over time, if you feel like your plans just don't feel right after trying them out, try something new till you find something you like. best of luck to you

Christmas lights on a timer. A string of LED lights uses very little power but gives off a gentle light. We have a string of white lights in our den which let us see but don’t interfere with watching TV. We have colored lights in the living room because they are pretty and make us feel happy.
The timers are so it always looks like somebody is home. And you don’t have to worry about turning them on once it gets dark. And and they turn themself off after you go to bed. And if they go off when you are still up it is like your house is telling you, “Go to bed”.

I'm 100% serious about this:
Take a shit in every toilet. Think about the lighting, fan, temperature, floor types. Think about the mat types and placement. Wiggle your knees and throw your elbows, figure out the "poopin' space' and it's limits. Think about TP roll placement. Think about where to put the plunger and spare rolls. If it's not a comfy shit then look into why the dump session didn't feel good(I don't mean FIBER issues even thou that's important too). Toilet height issue? Toilet seat issues? Foot placement?
There's a ton of things you can learn that you will be thankful for later. Simply take a healthy shit in every toilet and pay attention.

Thank you everyone for the advice. I am going to take it slow as far as furnishing the place, though I would like to get a couple chairs just in case friends come over.
Right now my priorities are new toilet seats. I was way ahead of you Push Val Venis. I'm also going to look at getting blackout curtains for my room. I plan to also paint it at some point (likely a very dark blue) but that can wait until I'm more settled.
Otherwise I'm loving having a full size fridge (my last place, my fridge was only about 4 feet tall and barely held what I needed it to). I might look into an air fryer or maybe finally use the slow cooker that's been gathering dust all this time.
Once I'm a little more rested up, I'll probably read through this thread again.

Lived with my buddy in his townhouse for nearly 10 years but when his girlfriend (later wife) moved in, they started changing a lot and it stopped feeling like a place we shared and more like their space and I just had a room there. I ended up retreating more and more into that room because it felt like I was encroaching on their space even though they never said or did anything to indicate that was the case. People are funny that way. That said, I'm pretty easy going with decoration and stuff so if I did manage to get married at some point, I'm confident that I'd be fine making adjustments to the place.
I'll keep this in mind though.

Well in my case it was completely irrational on her part as we had changed lots of stuff. Furniture, art, etc. So nothing you do will really help in that kind of situation.

I advise not making mines at home. They're dangerously explosive, and the government doesn't like it.
