What are some examples you can think of when a wrestler or an angle got hot and it ruined or turned a plan booking decision on its head Austin Aries getting super hot and TNA deciding to put the title on him instead of Storm I think is one. TNA looked to be building to Storm/Roode for BFG to cap off that long feud but Aries had a good X-Division title reign and was getting over with fans and put the title on him. Roode/Storm ended up being like a street fight at BFG I believe and Aries turned heel to help Hardy redemption run but that's a whole diff story Maybe Luger beating Hulk for the title can be considered for the Sting/Hogan but that angle wasn't ruined by the title change but other BS

I'm pretty sure that Kofi Kingston was NOT the plan for Daniel Bryan's opponent at that WrestleMania.

I'm pretty sure that Kofi Kingston was NOT the plan for Daniel Bryan's opponent at that WrestleMania. Ali was supposed to be in Kofi’s spot at EC and KO was supposed to be in his spot at WM. After that gauntlet match and how over Kofi got though they had no real choice but to change plans. That had to suck for KO. To go from expecting a world title match with Daniel Bryan to being left off the show. That’s partly why I was so happy for him getting the main event with Austin this year.

Becky getting so popular in 2018/19 ruined Vince’s (and Ric’s) dream of a Charlotte/Ronda Wrestlemania main event. Meltzer was reporting weekly from Jan 2018 that the long term plan was for Ronda to put over Charlotte in a historic first women’s main event at 35.
Becky was supposed to turn heel and be a feud for babyface Charlotte to kill a couple of months in the fall before she moved onto Ronda but Becky was the person fans wanted to see face/beat Ronda.
In the end powering ahead with Charlotte/Ronda with Becky lower on the card would have been like going ahead with the original plans 5 years earlier and having Batista/Orton main event while the people’s choice Bryan faced Sheamus. Crowds would have spent months shitting all over the build for the main event and chanted Bryan/Becky’s name at them.

During the spring/summer of 1991 it looked like (at least on TV) that the WWF was positioning Davey Boy Smith to go after Mr. Perfect for the IC title. Then Summerslam was announced and it was revealed that Bret Hart would be challenging for the title. At the time it really came out of nowhere, especially with no insider knowledge.

Batista getting unexpectedly over after a face turn tease in late 2004 changed their Triple H/Orton Mania 21 plans.

inversion: Ryback got hot at the absolute worst time for him to do so. he was big enough to replace Cena in a match but it was a match Cena was going to lose and WWE wasn't going to have Punk drop the belt to anyone before The Rock. he never recovered.

Heath Slater and Rhyno getting hot on post-new brand split SmackDown in 2016 seriously cooled the jets on American Alpha’s prospects big time (more than JBL not getting the towel thing, thus getting it dropped).

Hardy Boyz return at WrestleMania, cool off chances of Enzo and Cass being pushed in tag division? (yeah laugh at me, but they were over)

I don't think WCW expected Luger to get so hot during 1997. So they had to capitalize but the Sting plan forced them to make it a short reign which really hurt Lex in the long run.

Im suprised no one mentioned Daniel Bryan at Wrestlemania 30 yet. If I recall Daniel Bryan was supposed to go against Sheamus. and CM Punk was supposed to wrestle Triple H and the original title match was going to be just Orton vs Batista. With Punk leaving and Batista being booed and with how over Daniel Bryan was despite some of the questionable booking they gave him and the fact the yes movement was gaining traction. They had him beat HHH and win the main event.

Luger losing the title almost immediately pretty much killed him in WCW. He never was able to get back to that level, but he was incredibly organically over for awhile

TNA were doing some angle about the Dudleys trying to win the NWA tag titles as it the only one they hadn't. It went to a fan vote who would challenge for them, they lost.
Mason Ryan also messed up a fan vote but it might be a stretch to say that was due to his popularity.

A part of me wonders what would have happened to Hollywood Hogan's reign in 1998 had Goldberg not become white hot out of nowhere with DDP coming to mind as someone who missed the mark during this time, but let's be real, Hogan would have probably carried the title until Starrcade anyway. Maybe Hogan/Warrior II for the title gets cut off the Havoc feed instead, raising the overall quality of the show by a lot.

Another TNA one, whatever chance Sabin had at winning the table and getting a decent run was out the door with how hot AJ was. It basically worked the way they wanted anyway since the story of no world title shots for AJ for a year was built up but then he found the look and character and with Bully being a good heel, the story was set
Sabin coming back from wrecking his knees was a good storyline and would been a feel good story but he got caught in the middle of a good angle and they shoehorned the title on him for a few weeks which wrecked his character

I think that ultimately, Lex was better off for it. Keep in mind that he had previously been f***ed over twice, between "lol DQ'd for bleeding" and against Yokozuna in WWF. He did ultimately win the WCW title in his first run, but wasn't it after Flair walked? He really needed a legitimate win for his credibility, and even only briefly getting the title was still a bolster to his credibility. Hogan also benefited by staving off audience boredom by at least suffering a setback, even if it was momentary. Punk losing the title briefly to Ryback, AJ Styles (even if he was face) to Nakamura, or Roman to... lots of people at this point, really, would have probably done some good on resetting the clock to keep them fresher, but it's obviously a delicate balance, especially if you're trying to build a big, grand number to show off.

Is it safe to say Ultimate Warrior got so popular, he killed what should've been Brutus Beefcake's IC title push? Was the plan ever to make Bruti IC champion? I know he kept chasing after Honky Tonk Man throughout 1988, but Honky always cheated his way into keeping the gold, common sense would suggest that The Beefer would finally win it at Summerslam, but he was out via kayfabe injury at the hands of "Outlaw" Ron Bass, leaving HTM without an opponent.
Honky then issued an open challenge at the event, only for Ultimate Warrior to answer it and cream him in about 30 seconds, which is a fitting end to his 15 month title reign that consisted of him always escaping with the gold by the skin of his teeth. Don't get me wrong, it was probably the right choice given Warrior's growing popularity, but it's a damn shame for Beefcake since a)he was over with the fans and b)that's where the narrative was heading. It's almost like he was thrown under the bus.
If Beefcake wasn't in the cards, then how else would Honky's reign end? I can't picture anybody OTHER than Ultimate Warrior winning it, nor can I picture a World where he dosen't get the belt at some point.
Maybe if you want to give both(Beefcake and Warrior) an IC title reign, you can have Beefcake dethrone Honky at Summerslam, Honky wins it back at a Saturday Night's Main Event, only for Warrior to win it at The 1989 Royal Rumble maybe? Then again, I don't think it would be the same compared to what we got though.

It didn't kill him entirely not winning the IC title. He was still hot enough and over to get it in 1990 but he had the accident
