My question is: why would anyone (signed) take an Eliminator match as a challenger? If you lose, you'll drop down the rankings. If you win, the champ will be better prepared for the title match. Because title matches are rare for a single individual on the roster. If you get even a chance at a shot, you take it.

Better than putting up with “non title match” booking in other companies for decades with no reason why sometimes the title would be defended and sometimes it wouldn’t be using the same talent pool. Just to give the challenger a storyline reason for that feud to continue. Normally with them ending on up not winning the title in the end.
A lot of AEW’s rankings and rules aren’t for me… but in this case it does make sense if an undercard or outside guy like Mance Warner who hasn’t ever completed in AEW doesn’t get a title shot because he didnt earn it, but it lets a banger like Mance vs. Mox happen. If Mance gets the upset, hell yeah he should get the next title shot.
But if I ever had my own company. Screw elimination and non title matches, if the champion loses that guy is no longer champion even if it’s something that would be a tune up match.

I'm not a fan of it, this just complicates things that should be simple. Either have it a title match or make it a non title.

I mean, I think you can still have them and just drop the name of it. The understanding that anyone who pins the world champ in a non-title match is immediately no.1 contender; that aint a new concept in wrestling.

I think much like with Mance Warner this was a case of giving someone you have your eye on a tryout against the best in the company
