Why is the champion in it?
Why do it after a golden ticket battle royal? Why do a battle royal after a casino ladder match?

Why is the champion in it? Why do it after a golden ticket battle royal? Why do a battle royal after a casino ladder match? It wasn't a Tournament, it was an Eliminator Match, Champions in AEW constantly have these to set up possible title matches with open challengers, beat the champ, get a title match. They did the Battle Royal and Ladder Match to set up two contenders and intrigue heading into Full Gear. Hangman gets a feud for a few weeks with Mox, while MJF builds himself back up and has a Chip he can cash in whenever, as long as Tony ok's the match. They needed intrigue around the belt right now given what's happened, it's not exactly what Tony would have done as a plan A, but given the reaction Mox/Hangman's staredown got, it's a good Plan B

Man, first time I heard the term Eliminator was 2020 in nxt, and now I’ve heard it so much in AEW

Maybe I just didn't notice it before, but the first time I remember them saying that was while Mox was interim champion and I took that to mean that if you beat Mox you'd be the new interim champion until Punk came back.

Yeah, eliminator matches just means if you beat the champ, you get a title shot. It's not my favorite match type but at least it isn't too common.

Yeah there was the eliminator battle royals which made sense since it was a combo of royal rumble and elimination chamber rules. But them Eliminator tournament, that’s single elimination tournament. Now there’s one on one eliminator match.

I think the reason the "Eliminator Match" Name stuck was because of Janela missing the Eliminator Tournament that Omega won to become NOC and they just stuck that name on for when he got his match against Omega. Ever since then the "Beat The Champ to get a title shot." has had that Eliminator Match tagline.

I learned what a Championship Eliminator match is from MMA (literally a number one contender's match) so I have an irrational hatred for when AEW uses the term for non title matches. Like god dammit stop changing the rules you can't do this to me lmao.

Eliminator matches are basically the "Championship Contenders" matches WWE tends to do. AEW's mean a bit more, though, since they're usually used as an excuse to have a good match between the Champ and someone who wouldn't normally get a title shot. When WWE does them, it's to fill TV time in the least creative way, since we know the challengers are eventually going to get a shot, win or lose.

It's also a good way to showcase outside talent so they familiarize themselves with fans like with Juice last night. I notice it hasn't happened in awhile with already signed wrestlers.

I've always seen eliminator matches as a way for champs to be fighting champs without just giving title matches to anyone and everyone. Even if they're not formally announced as eliminator matches, if someone beats the champ in a one-on-one match they should get a title shot regardless, really.

Riho actually won one of these last year vs Britt and then faced her for the title at Battle of the Belts, so at least there's precedent for having the challenger win these and not having each one a foregone conclusion

My question is: why would anyone (signed) take an Eliminator match as a challenger? If you lose, you'll drop down the rankings. If you win, the champ will be better prepared for the title match.

Most of the peeps who take them aren't in the rankings and don't have that to lose, peeps like Hybrid 2 I remember taking them for that very reason, Private Party too, or Eddie and Penta who were a thrown together team at the time Peeps like Mance Warner and Juice getting them as a tryout to get a contract gives it a whole other meaning than just trying to get a title match too

That's not a tournament my friend. It's a weird way to call a non-title match. Same with that championship contender match in wwe (looks like that vanished with HHH)

That said, there's no real reason why anyone ranked would take one of these matches when they're already in line for a shot. The Eliminator matches tend to be for people outside the top 5 or even outside the company.
