There have been rumors for a long time about a planned match for Doink the Clown at WM 9 against Hogan! I never belived it because Hogan came back after almost being 1 year out of the Company and they would put him against someone like Doink??? Sounds totally unreal. Rumor says Hogan didn't want it which i complettly can understand.
But there is a side in my that actually thinks this could've worked. Hogan in 93 wasn't that huge anymore anways so they could have atleast mabye tried it. Doink scaring all the little kids could have been such a good feud.

Hogan had far too much pull to ever do a match with Doink. Given this was the same event where he was basically inserted into an unadvertised match to win the WWF title (making Bret and Yoko look bad), that kind of status suggest to me "match with the mid-card clown" was probably not in the cards.

I think Pritchard talked about it being thrown around as an idea but nothing more, the same with Prichard pushing for giving the title to Scott Steiner

This is one of those rumors that nobody of any authority has ever confirmed and makes no sense considering what was happening at the time, yet people, for some reason, take it as gospel.

The Doink character was really over for the first bit, before it became a literal joke. But I still don't think the character had enough steam to do something with Hogan

Heel Matt Borne Doink could've been a bigger character.
Doink is still extremely memorable but I always felt like he could've been a Joker type character and had a big feud with The Undertaker.
When Borne left and he became a face and they gave him Dink, he was never taken seriously again. He was basically a joke act. Even though at the time he was extremely over and had high profile feuds with Bam Bam and Lawler.

Hogan in 93 wasn't that huge anymore anways Was there anyone any bigger? Realistically no. Hogan coming back after a year even being in a tag title match (people obviously weren't expecting what ended up happening at the end of the show) was a bigger draw than Bret v Yoko and the world title match.

^ Not trying to defend Hogan here, but again I wouldn't be surprised that Vince sold Borne on facing Hogan without ever planning to go through with it.
Maybe if Doink had a year of build of credibility, maybe there was a possibility. But as much as I like Doink, he wasn't going to be a big draw against Hogan where he was at already.

It would have been the perfect matchup. They had the exact same hairstyle!

Yeah, Matt Borne did an absolute great job of taking what could have been a dead end gimmick and making it work, but Hulk Hogan wasn't going to work with the clown unless he's getting actual f***ing riot level of heat from the audience.

Well, Hogan worked with the Ultimate Warrior, and Doink was at the same level.
*so I've heard from some posters here and elsewhere

I think that's people hearing what they want to hear. Like all the people who were told they WOULD be champion when the conversation was probably more "if this gets over, I can see you as my next champion". Borne was probably told it was possible he'd face Hogan, which, if it'd gotten crazy over, sure why not.

Odd that Hogan or anyone else would have a bad relationship with Buzz Sawyer. Sure Buzz may have been a volatile, drug addled, rageaholic con-man who legitimately tried to maim people in and out of the ring, but once you get past that...

Like, if it happened in the 80's, I could see Hogan vs. Doink doing like a house show circuit, maybe a blow-off Saturday Night's Main Event. It's not gonna headline a WrestleMania though, even one during a low point like 1993. Borne was either misremembering or carnying us.

Ehm, timeline doesn't add up: Hogan returned Feb 22 1993. Bulldog was fired in Nov the previous year, and debuted in WCW Feb 21 1993.
