Ehm, timeline doesn't add up: Hogan returned Feb 22 1993. Bulldog was fired in Nov the previous year, and debuted in WCW Feb 21 1993. That was my initial thought too since Borne and Bulldog were ships passing in the night in late 92. Doink debuted about the same time Bulldog was leaving in October. So it is possible Doink was promised a run with Bulldog and possibly the IC belt since Bulldog was fresh off SummerSlam 92, which would have been around the time Borne would have been negotiating with Vince to come in. Either way we're going off the memory of a guy known as much for his drug use as his wrestling ability. So who knows? Doink and Bulldog are gone and Vince probably has zero recollection of any of this, and if he does he certainly doesn't care enough to talk about it. Hogan had some weird rumored opponents for WM 9. First it was Dustin Rhodes, who Hogan quickly dismissed as "that kid with the buggy whip arms". Now rumors of a Doink feud. No wonder Hogan's 93 run was both brief and odd.

I mean he did have a big spot at WM 9. He won a featured match against a babyface they'd been building for 6 months. Now afterwards they did almost nothing with heel Doink until he lost to Savage on Raw, the moment I consider the informal end to his heel run, and then did the face turn. But him beating Crush and the 2 Doinks thing was a pretty big deal.

Because Doink replaced Lawler in his match against Bret at SummerSlam. It was unadvertised but he ended up wrestling the biggest star in the company at the 2nd biggest show of the year. I would also consider that a big deal.

The match where Randy outdoinked (Vince’s words) by having the little Macho Man appear from under the ring and outsmarting him (meaning Doink) took place before Summerslam and that was the beginning of the end of his push with Doink getting comeuppance for all the things he did…sort of.

Original Doink has always fascinated me. I wonder if it's something Vince lost interest in, as he was always known to do, or if he knew Matt Borne wouldn't be sticking around too much longer and basically washed his hands of it by the end of the summer.

He was around until October or so, but he was fired before Survivor Series which is why the 4 Doinks match was changed to the Doinkwackers & Doinks on a Mission.

Matt Bourne was one of pro wrestling's biggest carnies, and that's saying something.

Speaking of Doink does anybody remember Doink and Mr. Perfect wrestling in a 93 KOTR qualifying match....it was a terrific match that went to a time limit draw (rare to see) so they had anothed match for a spot in the KOTR...and AGAIN it went to a time limit draw. Finally they had a 3rd match and Perfect ultimately wins.
Always found this little 3 or 4 week feud between them interesting, since it really highlighted what a talented wrestler Doink was. I dont recall much in terms of clownish hijinks during these, it was just straight wrestling.

Matt Bourne was one of pro wrestling's biggest carnies, and that's saying something. In 1996 or 1997 rumors started spreading among wrestling fans on the internet that Matt Bourne had died. Now the more official places denied this, but this was the wild west days of the internet so this didn't do much to slow the rumors down. That weekend an indy show booked an angle where the show would start with them performing a ten bell memorial for Bourne, and while that was happening he'd come out of the crowd, jump the railing, come into the ring and cut a shoot promo about how everybody was an idiot for thinking he was dead. Truly the carniest of the carnies.

I'm torn between being disgusted at how scummy that idea actually is and disappointed that he didn't use the heel catchphrase of "I was dead... but I'm Bourne Again".

I wasn't at the show and as far as I know there's no video of it. All I'm going on are fuzzy memories of reports on the internet of it from 25 years ago.

Doink wasn't going to put over the Hulkster, so I said "Get that clown jabronie outta here or me and my band, Metallica, are going on tour with WCW brother!"

I feel there's a 50/50 chance he simply is getting mixed up versus he's just lying. I do know wrestlers often have a lot of events just conflate in their heads due to how repetitive a job it can be at times. Well, that and poor sleep, heavy travel, substance abuse in Bourne's case, and head injuries.

Bret thought he was wrestling Warrior and winning via submission at Mania 9, so, Bourne doesn’t have the craziest Mania 9 idea.

It's one of the key angles that got me jnto wrestling at 8 years old, that and the RAW where Marty won the IC belt/123 Kid upset Razor. Still have episodes of Superstars and Wrestling Challenge takedown vhs at my parents house. It was interesting, there was at keast one where he wasn't annoyed at the draw, more mocking Perfect and laughing, like he was trying with him.

Probably just "talk" - if this was when Davey was there it may have been around October when they were trying to court Hogan back, it may (or may not) have been brought to Hogan as an idea for his return, but nothing more than an idea.

I *think* there were Doink-switcharoos. but other than that, as you said, just straight up excellent matches. As you'd expect from Perfect and Doink.

I know people hated the face turn, but in an era of mostly taped shows & quarterly ppvs we never got to see where Borne would have gone with it.
