Hello all!!
Happy Saturday! I hope everyone is doing well.
I had a question about Chyna.
She was absolutely a face going into 2000, whatwith her feud with Jericho for the IC Title at Survivor Series 1999. They again met at Armageddon 1999, where Jericho emerged victorious, and Chyna shook his hand after the match, stating that he was the better wrestler that night. Then, for some inexplicable reason, they were paired as co-IC champions where they feuded heavily with Hardcore Holly (who, in my opinion, should have had one IC title run during that era), where they shared an uneasy alliance. Jericho, who was a tweener at that point, did some pretty heelish actions to Chyna, such as hitting her hands with a hammer.
At Wrestlemania 16, Jericho emerged victorious with the European Championship in a triple threat match against Kurt Angle (who was the Inter-Euro Champ at the time) and Chris Benoit. Benoit walked away with the IC title, leaving Kurt Angle without any championship. The very next night, on the April 3rd, 2000 edition of Raw is War, Jericho was pitted in a match against Guerrero for the European Championship. Chyna was in the corner of Jericho, and I believe leading up to this match, Jericho and Chyna were on pretty good terms and Eddie was vying for Chyna's affections. Chyna ended up costing Jericho the match by hitting him with a DDT out of nowhere. She then embraced the newly crowned European Champion, Eddie Guerrero.
I'm not understanding the rationale behind this. Just the prior night, at Wrestlemania 16, Chyna pinned Guerrero in a six man tag team match with her and Too Cool vs. The Radicalz (minus Benoit). The Radicalz (including Eddie) were absolutely heels, and up until this point, Chyna acted like she couldn't stand Guerrero for the life of her. The sudden heel turn was bizarre and confusing. I remember it like it was yesterday (senior year of high school) and my boyfriend at the time and I just looked at each other, our mouths agape with confusion. Why give Jericho (who was pretty over at that point) the European title in a monumental win over Angle and Benoit, only to have him lose it the very next night in a confusing heel turn from Chyna. I could see if Kurt Angle or, more importantly, Benoit, had interfered in the match and cost Jericho the match. It did lead to a cute relationship between Guerrero and Chyna, but really, was it worth it? I mean, that couple also developed a rift because of the IC title as well. I feel as though they were retreading the same ground with that.
What's even more confusing is that the fans were sort of unwavering in her support for her, and I don't remember them treating her any different after the heel turn. I could be wrong, but it seemed like Guerrero and Chyna were a power couple following this and it seemed more like Eddie turned tweener during their relationship (until the aforementioned rift between the two over the IC title). I know Chyna was absolutely the face going into the summer of 2000. Although, I must admit, her popularity started waning after her Playboy cover shoot, and also when Lita became the WWF Women's Champion.
Am I missing something here, or was it just really weird writing? You guys know how much I love the Attitude Era to death, but taking off the nostalgia glasses, there were a lot of swerves here and there that didn't make a whole lot of sense.
I've rattled on for far too long. I hope everyone enjoys their weekend!
