One thing I absolutely agree with is that Bischoff is a massive hypocrite here. I remember watching WCW back in the day, & they'd throw two randomers out there to have a match all the time. Often you wouldn't see them for weeks afterwards too, making the whole thing pointless. No less annoying when AEW does it, mind. Most of the time though, AEW wrestlers do not disappear for weeks, especially if you include the Youtube Shows, which can sometimes play into main roster storylines as well But a majority of the time we will see a majority of AEW's roster featured in some way across Dynamite or Rampage, most of them not vanishing for more than two weeks. With the size of their roster, I consider that impressive.

I don't mind matches without story as long as they're given time to tell a story in the ring, and not used purely to sell a story unrelated to what was happening between the people in the ring. WCW loved having <heel> come out and squash the guys in the ring, or have commentary no sell everything and talk about Hulk Hogan instead, using the match as wallpaper rather than something people might actually enjoy. Say what you will about AEW's booking, they very rarely make a match feel as irrelevant as Bischoff often did with the WCW undercard.

It's kinda weird people get so wrapped up in what Eric says. He just gives his feedback when Conrad asks him, in the same way a sports radio host gives his/her commentary

He just gives his feedback when Conrad asks him, in the same way a sports radio host gives his/her commentary I used to like Eric, and in some ways I still do, but listening to enough of his podcasts has taught me that he's a Carny's Carny (as you would expect from someone who was brought into the business from Verne Gagne), he's just a Carny who made it in the corporate world. He's (usually) willing to admit his own failings more than others, so I'll give him that. I think his hard-on for AEW stems from the fact that Tony Khan doesn't have to answer to Turner execs in the same way, and he gets to use Bischoff's mistakes as a guidebook for what NOT to do.

With the size of their roster, I consider that impressive. I think the "disappearing" complaint is part of a larger thing. I don't want to project my own assessment onto others, but I know that personally, it's just very difficult for me to feel like the bookers actually give half a shit about at least 75% of their roster. This is why it especially rubbed me the wrong way that TK was justifying less writing, because a more engaged, generally organized booker would notice and care about something like Starks maintaining his momentum. But (and this is my interpretation, not necessarily what's true) it feels like Starks just isn't someone the bookers care about much. They only have energy to focus on one storyline at a time involving people they don't care about, and Starks and Hobbs just got their turn. I mean, I remember after the trios tournament someone was insisting that Silver and Reynolds were going to be featured and booked well, because look at them getting all this offense against big stars like the Elite! And... no, they're back on Dark, putting over shiny new toys, just like always. As a viewer, it gets depressing to see how there's like maybe four storylines going on at any given time, all of which are the same or very similar to storylines that were happening a year ago and involve the same people. It's... actually very reminiscent of WCW in that way. A roster that's at least 2 times too big, the obvious Important Ones at the top, and a bunch of scrubs the audience can desperately try to get them to push, but it'll almost never work.

This is why I liked the rankings and win/loss statistics they used to do in AEW, it gave meaning to a match without actually the need of a story. Pity that has fallen off the radar.

When Bully was revealed to be the leader, they at least *tried* to make sense of everything prior with him explaining everything. But even that had some really big plot holes

Yeah, they still mention them, especially leading into a match like Swerve in Our Glory vs. FTR, but they're certainly not as crystal clear as they were earlier on. Still, at least bringing them up is usually a good way to go; "this match likely has important title shot ramifications" can be enough sometimes.

I dunno, people still complained alot about "why is this match happening" even when it was pretty clear it was due to the rankings. Just a bit damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Also the whole point of Orange Cassidy challenging two guys to triple threats is so that he can wrap it up in one match, not two. Less work especially because the two guys are also going to be beating each other up. Seemingly random matches are important for a more realistic sports feel and to prevent wrestlers getting stuck in bubbles. Real sports have a lot of crappy and lopsided matches between the big ones. Wardlow in particular needs more random title defenses. Stuff like Dax's singles matches or Dustin/Billy Gunn offering something different can be welcome changes of pace. Everything being a heated personal rivalry waters down the real blood fueds. Yeah that's a fair point as well, every match being part of a heated personal rivalry just means there's little chance of something new being thrown into the mix.

It feels a bit crazy to consider given the context of modern wrestling, but really most of wrestling history is built on cards with matches that are "just happening", albeit with simple kayfabe explanations like "a chance to move up in title rankings" or "winner's share of the purse" or whatever. Plenty of house show programs over the years didn't really start out with an inciting incident, it'd just be two people paired together whose hostilities would eventually spill out onto TV in some capacity. Obviously things change, and pro wrestling moving to weekly multi-hour primetime cable super-show format means just relying on "this is how it was done for nearly all of the 20th century" doesn't always apply, but it's still interesting to think about.

I think people made/make too big of a deal about rankings. Too me it was always a nice tool if they wanted to do a showcase match against a champ.

I mean yes, Eric is usually full of shit with a lot of his criticism and this is another example of that. I would love to ask Eric what story there was behind a Sick Boy vs. Lenny Lane match on Nitro lol

Don’t hem and haw on it depending on what story you want to tell.

Still a flaw, though.

Orange creating triple threat title matches is like his version of being a fighting champion. I dig it.

Wrestling is simulating a sport, so when you take into account that everyone is theoretically trying to rise up the ranks and win championships/money/notoriety, doesn’t just about *every* match have a built in story already?
Elaborate storylines or Lucha Underground type detailed backstories, that’s not the cake. It’s the icing.
