It's also harder to stand out now with that kind of gimmick now.
While not exactly this, Mr. Perfect's gimmick was the best wrestler, Bret Hart's was similar.
But they were guys who were CLEARLY more skilled than 90% of the roster.
These days, even the gimmicky guys will have some kind of complicated holds, be able to chain wrestle a bit and be a bit flippy.
Take a guy like Dolph Ziggler, his gimmick of stealing the show, really was he doing anything that much more impressive than anyone else?
Are any serious guys doing anything better than guys like Kenny? Bryan? AJ? Joe?
The standard is so high now that technical ability isn't going to stand out.

No-nonsense technical wrestler gimmick = good "I wear a suit and talk. very. slowly" gimmick = bad
