And that you were surprised to learn about later on? As we know, nothing these days is original and also everything comes from somewhere. It should be no surprised that pro wrestling is no different from that. Some are pretty obvious(like Sting's crow persona) while others are more obscure. What are some of the things that happened in pro wrestling that they spoofed elsewhere in the pop culture World?
The Goldust/Marlena Break Up Angle - While I previously thought this was at the end of November 1997, I did some research and found out the segment took place on November 3rd, so if there was anything that lead up to it between Badd Blood and then that showed signs The Bizarre One was going back to the dark side, please fill me in.
That being said, the WWF's golden couple had a sit down interview with Good Ol' JR. While things looked bright(or golden) at first in the interview, things took a dark turn when The Grandson of a Plumber berated his then-wife and then said he was tired of putting up with her and his estranged father and decided to live his life on his own terms. Which eventually meant being submissive to bondange queen Luna Vachon, because she "got" him...apparentally.
What many don't know is their sit down interview was a parody of a September 1988 interview Mike Tyson did with then wife Robin Givens on 20/20, with Barbara Walters being the interviewer. Givens described life with Tyson as "torture, pure hell, worse than anything I could possibly imagine.Givens also described Tyson as "manic depressive" – which was later confirmed by doctors – on national television while Tyson looked on with an intent and calm expression. A month later, Givens announced that she was seeking a divorce from the allegedly abusive Tyson.
It should be noted that the couple(Goldust/Terri) did eventually divorce for real nearly two years later, so the interview might've not been fully kayfabe. I know Rhodes did have real life animosity with his father Dusty(which was acknowledged on TV several times), so it wouldn't be too surprising if him and Terri weren't on the best of terms at that time.
Any obscure pop culture references you can think of that happened in the square circle?
