I'm kinda amazed that the recent WWE 2k games have like, literally everyone possible they can squeeze in and that's before DLC. Granted, the purges the past couple of years didn't help keep it current, but the sheer numbers are impressive. But then my frame of reference is the PS2 Smackdown games where they didn't even have DLC and a lot of the roster was already outdated the day of release. You also only had like, 30 CAW slots per saved game. It's funny: SvR'06 is a fantastic PS2 wrestling game on a lot of levels, but the roster is admittedly one of the weakest of the PS2 games. No Dudleyz, no Hardyz, no Hogan, etc. Furthermore, you also had Jake Roberts inaccessible to most people who played the game, which was infuriating. It still manages to be one of the best, but it's a major knock against the game, sort of like how not having Hell in a Cell is a bit of a damper on the N64 wrestling games, especially because of how broken the cage matches are.

Showdown : Legends of Wrestling III ... 73 Legends that were not under a WWE contract at that time. Including Ultimate Warrior, Sid Vicious, Sting, Hogan, Andre, Rude, Savage, Hitman, Bruno Sammartino, Andy Kaufmann ....

You're mixing up the original SvR and SvR06. 06 was the better game but it did have Hogan (in 3 different incarnations, which was a prelude for things to come) and the Dudley's and Jeff Hardy were in TNA at that point. The roster was messed up in it's own ways though, including not having Brian Kendrick even though he was tag champ, no Mr. Kennedy, Cena was still a mid-carder despite being at the height of his push, no Lashley, and a bunch of women wrestlers who were long gone by the time the game came out

Yeah SvR 06 still had Cena as the doctor of thugganomics, despite that incarnation of Cena being obsolete for about 6 months or so by the time it came out.

I mean crap as in I paid full price and only played it a half dozen times. Compare to Legends of Wrestling 2 which was not great but it still got a decent amount if play from me.

I remember how such a big deal it was because for a lot of the big names who also haven't been a wrestling game in a very long time or never. Suck that it was glitchy as hell to play. The roster was amazing. Also the the last time Bobby Heenan did commentary.

Not only that, his stats were way lower than the other main eventers and he didn't have the STFU (which IIRC was only in September so that's reasonable)

Another vote for SmackDown 2. My version of the nWo were created wrestlers: Scott Hall, Tajiri & Mikey Whipwreck.

Showdown: Legends of Wrestling has an amazing roster... Unfortunately the game was developed by late stage Acclaim.

I wasn't really watching WCW a ton at the time (I was a little kid) but I remember being in awe of the Mayhem roster. It just had so many dudes and you could do so many things with them.

While no Jake Roberts or Rick Rude was a pity, the original WWF Superstars arcade game did quite well with its roster of Hogan, Savage, Duggan, Bossman, Warrior, HTM, and DiBiase/Andre as the boss characters. Everyone was still largely prominent at the time of its release and its a pretty solid window into the time period of the era.

King of Colosseum 1 and 2 have absolutely ridiculous rosters. 1 had full licensing from the 4 major Japanese promotions at the time (NJPW, AJPW, NOAH, and Zero-One) and had to be split across two different disks because it was so deep, while number 2 didn't have licensing it still had everyone available, plus American guys like Samoa Joe and literally every major name in Japanese wrestling ever up to 2005 as an unlockable. My mind was blown when you could unlock the Japan Hulk Hogan moveset

SVR 2009, despite having no legends, had a pretty up to date roster when it came out. We did get the Masked Man and Tony lol.
WWE Raw 2 had a good roster too. That game had people that weren't in Here Comes the Pain nor WrestleMania XIX: Billy Gunn, Jamie Noble, Nidia, Christopher Nowinski, Crash, Shannon Moore. Even Tommy Dreamer was in.

It's a bad game, but the roster of Attitude is one of its strengths, and one of the best upgrades from a preceding wrestling game, given how Warzone had, what, like a dozen or so guys? 3 of which were Foley.

I'll throw a dark horse and say that the TNA Impact game had a great roster. Angle, Sting, Christian, Steiner, Nash, Jarrett, Booker, Dudleys, LAX, Styles, Joe, Daniels, The Machine Guns, etc.
It had a great selection of guys for that time in TNA. Shame that no one really felt distinct to play as outside of AJ Styles.

Thinking about it, how insane would it have been if they got Dennis Rodman into Revenge? It would have been a really poor use of money, but it would have that much further captured the era. Shame there's no CAW in the game. Should have been in the NWO pack for 2k22, as hes in nba games On a slightly random note, his daughter Destiny is in FIFA 23

Shut Your Mouth was always a highlight for me. Lots of the Attitude era WWF roster still in the mix, but with all the WCW/ECW arrivals, as well as some of the faces that'd come to define the coming era (although Cena and Batista are notable exceptions, just a bit too late to make the cut). There were a few guys who were too late to be added that had preset approximations made in the CAW section, I think Cena was one of them.

WWF Royal Rumble for the SNES had to me one of the best rosters of all time. Savage, Perfect, Taker, Hart, Tatanka, Crush, Flair, Razor, Shawn, Yoko, Lex and Dibiase are worthy of any game.

WCW Mayhem wasn't what I'd call a good game, but I do recall the roster being oddly robust.
