Were they supposed to be a couple (in kayfabe), or was it just a business relationship?

Was a little vague but the gist was, Savage still wanted a woman in his corner but he wanted one more effective than Miss Elizabeth.

I don't think they were meant to be a romantic item, given it didn't really come up when she basically offered to nail Warrior for a title shot, but they certainly blurred the lines sometimes.

I loved that pairing. Elizabeth running out to save him when Sherri was kicking his ass at WM7 is one of my favorite wrestling moments.

Like one time on an early Raw, Sherri was announced to be on WWF Mania with Macho and Petingill, and Savage is all "ooh yeah, she can give me a sunset flip!"

Yeah it was quite vague, but then again so was Randy and Elizabeth in the early days, It was very vague, she was his manager, but she clearly had feelings, and he treated her badly, it was never said they were a couple, during the Hogan stuff it began to be mentioned more that he was his woman - in fact they may have "gotten together" when he turned face, or she protected him from Honky - but either way it was very grey area
And I think it was the same with Sherri, it was implied he had dumped Elizabeth for her, but really on screen we just saw a business partnership.
There was quite a few relationships like this in the earlier, Debra & Jeff Jarrett, Bam Bam and Luna (he called her his main squeeze but it was still a bit grey) Skip & Sunny etc etc

But I always imagined that it was probably little more than a wrestler/manager relationship. After Savage lost the World title, and lost Elizabeth he went off the deep end. Went crazy, started dating a woman as crazy as he was being. That was of course when he beat King Duggan and started acting like a king, so he had a bit of weird identity crisis and Sherri was the enabler and used him until he lost his career to the Ultimate Warrior and then he was useless to her. And it took Miss Elizabeth coming out to save him to get his life back on track.
Just another period that shows why Randy Savage’s WWF career is one of the greatest story arcs in Wrestling history, especially from 1985-1992.

A very different relationship. While Savage would be jealous if someone like George Steele was attracted to Elizabeth, he would pimp out Sherri to the Warrior to get a title shot.

Savage drove away the "good woman" with his inexcusable behavior, but he was incapable of taking ownership of it, so he spiraled further by immediately attaching himself to the trashiest, batshit crazy witch he could find. There was definitely a business interest, especially from Sherri's end, but they were totally having loveless, drug-fueled kinky sex. Savage wasn't just OK with Sherri offering herself to Warrior -- he probably instructed it as part of their weird control games.

I am not sure if this was a intentional callback but knowing Savage maybe, he had that type of mind. Wrestlemania III and VII quite a good comparison. Savage lost maybe the match of his life, and he is at his lowest point, so while Elizabeth consoles him when he lost to Steamboat, Sherri literally kicked him when he was down after losing to the Warrior. Elizabeth cared about him no matter what, Sherri was only using him and once he out lived that usefulness, kicked him to the curve. But if you want to spin off to Sherri prospective, she used Savage, but a couple of years later, the shoe was on the other foot when she fell in love with Shawn Michaels and he used her. And she got a taste of her medicine, and does come full circle on that Raw when Sherri got into that cat fight with Luna, and she and Savage are friends again.

He was the king. He needed a queen
Narratively, it was perfect. He went from the good princess to the evil witch, and when the witch eventually turned on him, the princess saved him.

Imagine if they had paired Savage and Sherri back up in WCW. That would have been a match made in heaven.
