EDIT: I made this thread a month ago about the different versions and we deduced that the 1959 version of 'Miracle on 34th Street' was lost. Well, as of today, it has been uploaded to YouTube with the full story of it being found at the beginning. Enjoy!
ORIGINAL POST:
So, we all know the timeless 40s original and the warmly remembered 90s remake - but has anyone here seen any of the three versions in-between?
All made for TV, I was trying to track down the 70s version on DVD/Blu when I realized that there were two more.
Any of them worth seeing?

It stars Ed Wynn who was a very funny actor, but it only has 112 votes. Anyway, I could see that being good as a TV movie. I haven’t seen any of the three remakes in question though. It looks like aside from the 1959 and 1973 versions the other one you’re talking about was part of the The 20th Century-Fox Hour anthology. A colorized version of the 1955 episode is on YouTube though I’ll refrain from posting it because I’m not sure about the copyright situation.

I think 1955 is probably public domain as a cursory glance at a flood of Christmas DVD compilations I sifted through tonight where the other content is public domain includes it. I don't think the 1959 one is lost as much as it's probably in a weird place with the rights making it obscure. I've only seen it online in two different "CHRISTMAS CLASSICS" DVDs that contain Scrooge and two other specials that look vaguely familiar. 1973 version seems to be on YouTube as well. Tempted to give it and '55 a watch.

I haven't seen any of them, but if Santa Claus was really immortal, why didn't he just play himself in all four versions?

Only seen the original and 90s remake. The 90s remake actually isn't bad, but nothing can beat the original. I watch it every Christmas Eve.

Hey, so here's something unexpectedly frustrating - at some point there was a two-pack DVD release of the original 'Miracle on 34th Street' and 'Ben Hur' which was made in 1959 - so dashing through the snowjob of "Miracle on 34th Street 1959" searches results in a lot of inadvertantly mislabeled copies.
This has risen to the top of my Christmas list on pure principle now.

Is the 1959 version lost? It stars Ed Wynn who was a very funny actor, but it only has 112 votes. Wow, so it turns out your instincts were correct! After some more digging, it turns out the DVD releases listing the 1959 Miracle on 34th Street were actually mislabeled releases of the 1955 one. Making all this additionally complicated is Edmund Gwenn, the actor who played Kris Kringle in the original 1947 Miracle on 34TH Street, died in 1959 so even researching the title and the year is incredibly difficult to find information on it. Further, the 1959 was thought lost for years after its initial broadcast until a copy on KINOSCOPE was found a midst a large box of items NBC donated to the Library of Congress the year that the original Miracle of 34th Street was added to their posterity collection. Since then the 1955 version is available to watch there OR one private citizen has it. I tweeted at him today politely asking them to upload it to YouTube and they said that they'll hopefully be able to do it this weekend. It's been a great year for lost media and hopefully this caps it all off!

I just saw the 40s version yesterday. It’s wild watching media from back then. All the actors are dead from old age (Natalie Wood if she were still alive would be in her 80s). The offices had no computers ect

The offices had no computers ect The scene of Santa with the Dutch girl from it though still absolutely moves me beyond words every time I watch it. Might be my favorite scene in any movie ever.

I watched the original last night. It can be such a delight. About 13 years ago I saw it at the dollar store on DVD but soon realized it was some other version. I’ll have to dig that out and see what it actually is.
