I really like the direct to DVD movies you can get for a few dollars at stores but even though you may have a famous actor, the titles aren't as well known as some of their famous work.
My personal favorite is Righteous Kill with Deniro and Pacino from 2007 or 08. They play aging cops fed up with the system where killers go free. I won't give it away but there's a big surprise twist at the end. This movie got mixed reviews IIRC from wikipedia but it's one I watch about once a year. It also has a few short spots with Brian Dennehy who I always liked and think he should have been bigger than he was.
Pacino also did 88 minutes where he must outwit a serial killer before he gets a stay of execution for serial killings of women. It isn't the greatest but also something I watch once a year and is enjoyable with a few twists and good supporting cast.
Out of Time with Denzel Washington is an all time favorite. I'm not sure if that was direct to DVD but I don't remember it in theaters. I'm forgetting some others.

Nightcrawler was the movie that got me to take Jake Gyllenhaal seriously as an actor, but it seems like it's been forgotten amidst the other work he's done both before and after.

The Beguiled with Clint Eastwood The King of Comedy with Robert De Niro Taking of Pelham One Two Three with Walter Matthau Thanks for the replies, everyone. I will have to check some of these out. Of all listed the two above are the only ones I've seen. I thought they were pretty big but I guess in the grand scheme of the actor's careers maybe not so much. The only seen I remember from King is Jerry Lewis refusing an autograph and the lady being pissed. Jerry admits this is something that happened in real life. Jerry was known for being difficult to fans with autographs.

Don't know if it that's obscure, but I enjoyed the boxing flick, "Play It To The Bone," with Woody Harrelson and Antonio Banderas.

Don’t know how obscure it is, but: Conspiracy, starring Kenneth Branagh, Stanley Tucci, and Colin Firth.
It’s a 2001 television film by HBO and BBC. Maybe the best movie about World War II ever made, imo, and there’s not even one gunshot. It’s a dramatization of the Wannsee Conference, the high-level meeting of a bunch of Nazi bureaucrats and military leaders where they laid out the plan of what would become The Holocaust. The dialogue and acting are like something out of a very well-crafted stage play, making the extremely dark subject matter really compelling.

The dialogue and acting are like something out of a very well-crafted stage play, making the extremely dark subject matter really compelling. It’s very good, btw. Firth winds up being a sympathetic sociopath, which is very weird to see, Branagh the charming monster, Tucci the business-like monster (which tracks with all of the contemporary evidence about the guy he was portraying), and there’s a very short “Hey! I know that guy!” cameo near the beginning of the film featuring a MCU star. The only major complaint is that it makes it seem like the conference was a single, short meeting instead of a series of meetings.

Undercover Blues, a 1993 spy comedy starring Dennis Quaid, Kathleen Turner, and a "pretty early in his film career but completely steals the movie" Stanley Tucci.
