I'm rewatching this era for the first time since it originally aired.
Was HBK's "oops" at Summerslam planned to be the start of a heel turn? Because it really feels like Vince and Shawn himself are surprised by the crowd abandoning him in the weeks that followed. Only weeks before that it seemed like they were trying to position Shawn opposite Bret with his pro-America speeches and then Dudes With Attitudes 2.0 with Austin.
It's bizarre just how quick everything flipped in '97, where the fans seem to enjoy shitting on the poster boys of the New Generation seemingly just because they aren't Austin.

Always thought it was strange HBK was turned heel when Bret was a heel as well. Ideally I guess HBK would have been a face up until Montreal then turn him?

This was the final push into fully transitioning into the Attitude Era pushing the whole "Shades of Grey" style of character building.
This direction was made even clearer just a few weeks later when Vince did his famous "Cure For The Common Show" editorial where he outright stated that fans are tired of having their intelligence insulted by the whole clean cut good guy vs bad guy dynamic.

Yeah, I mean if the company is going in the direction of Austin, I think it was fine to have Shawn and Bret be heels, since they had already had their time and the fans were turning on them. Anyone who faces Austin was going to be the default heel anyways, so why not play into that?

Went back to watch the raw promo after summerslam, and once Lawler was on HBK's side, that cemented the heel turn. I don't think it really got official until his 1st tag match with HHH & Chyna.

There is a scene in Wrestling with Shadows where Bret outright asks Pat Patterson - whilst disussing the finish of his match with Taker at Summerslam - if the plan was to turn HBK heel as a result. Pat says he believes so, and Bret voices his concerns that he might take some of his heat.
