Thought I would ask the opposite question since I found the other thread pretty interesting. Who went from being a great promo to being pretty mediocre? My first thought was Roddy Piper. Dude went from being an all timer to giving pretty sad and meandering speeches as he got older.

Kurt Angle was one of the greatest of all time. Could do comedy but could do serious and make you think he wanted to cripple someone. At some point though he just lost all his mic skills.

While he never turned into a bad promo, Austin eventually just became a guy doing his catchphrases and little else. Go from his stuff in 96/97/98 to the post 2003 non-wrestling runs and its night and day.

Heyman. That promo at the end of the invasion is of the greatest of all time, maybe the best.
Then he gave up and repeated the same old shit ad nauseam for years.
A lot of wrestlers maintain the delivery long after they run out content tbf.

The Rock's heel promos were usually great. His face promos get extremely repetitive and unfunny, however. I cringed at "Kung Pow Bitch". Kurt Angle was one of the greatest of all time. Could do comedy but could do serious and make you think he wanted to cripple someone. At some point though he just lost all his mic skills. "Stephanie McRan"

His work was much better whenever he was a heel. Chris Jericho in 2000 was another example. He rebounded, again, when he turned heel, then in subsequent characters.

Superstar Billy Graham went from one of the most charismatic guys in the business cutting promos that would inspire countless future wrestlers to.. a tired sounding faux karate fellow on the verge of falling asleep in his own promo: Billy Graham hyping himself and/or promoting AmbienTo his credit he managed to at least get some of his mojo back when he went to the NWA.

Roddy Piper is the ultimate answer I think. From the most cutting edge promo in the entire medium to the most cringe promo inside a 10-year span.

All of the 80s stars handled the transition from pre taped promos to in ring ones that became popular around the mid 90s badly. Probably not helped by reaching an age where cutting down on cocaine was necessary.
I’m sure both will recover due to talent and youth but MJF is struggling to find new material and Saraya is suffering from promo rust.

I would read a whole book about whatever mix of drugs and being 35 years old destroying little kids at karate classes prompted him to do this with himself.

The best way to put it: A wrestling journalist I won't name (due to backlash) has said in 1997, "Roddy Piper was the greatest promo of the past 15 years, but he hasn't made sense in the past 7-8 of them."

Wasn’t he strung out on heroin for a while? This is certainly exhibit A in that argument.

"Great" might be overselling it, but Matt Hardy went from a weirdly captivating character promo onto the indies who could draw people to TNA shows at their otherwise worst and cooked up a huge career renaissance where he could get his father in law and a drove over, then went back to WWE and lost it. And that's just on WWE either because his time in TNA has struggled to find any interesting character work either. It's just been rough for him ever since.

Hardy was one of my guys for years V1 to Broken. Let’s gloss over the “I hope you die in a car crash” era Then he went back to WWE and ever since something has been missing, his AEW run has been awful. To the point where my son wanted to meet him at comic con and I could care less. I don’t know if it’s from all the kids, the injuries, dealing with his brother, but Hardy has been phoning it in for years.

Big Boss Man. He got it back later but I'm going more by his original WWF run in the late 80's-early 90's. After he turned face I would honestly say he was one of the best promo guys in the company in 90 and 91 in that he had good intensity and was creative with what he said. However by 92 while not bad he wasn't nearly as good as he just started to become over reliant on saying the same lines and catchphrases and become more lazy when it came to what he was saying.
