R.I.P.
I still remember being shocked when he beat Hulk Hogan by countout.

RIP Lanny
So sad to hear this, considering he proudly cared about the family legacy.

Almost every post on various sites have him as one of the real good and classy guys in wrestling and a guy who would do anything for anyone. That can be pretty rare but he deserves that moniker.

Very surprised to hear this as he always kept himself in good shape and was never a drug guy at least that I know of. RIP Lanny. And this worries me. For many reasons.

I had the privilege of connecting with Lanny via social media, and Lanny went above and beyond more than any wrestler has in terms of interacting with their fans. Some wouldn't even dare do that with a single fan. Lanny took on as many friends as Facebook would allow and even more followers.
I am glad to say I had the privilege of being one of those friends. Even though I was a complete stranger, Lanny made you feel like you were family, and why? Because to this day, out of all the wrestlers I'm actually friends with on Facebook, it would be Lanny Poffo, who undoubtedly had a busy schedule and much better things to do, who took the time every year to send me a personal birthday greeting. It felt like being acknowledged by a childhood hero, and it just made the day that much more special.
I will miss him, the fans will miss him, the world will miss him.

Very surprised to hear this as he always kept himself in good shape and was never a drug guy at least that I know of. RIP Lanny. And this worries me. For many reasons. I hate to speculate, but that morning he did fly to New York from Ecuador, which is a minimum 8 hour international flight and that night sat through at least 3 hours of a musical - which is why they tell you to get up and move around especially if you're a bigger guy so I fear that may have been a factor. I never speculate on causes of death, but given how alarmed and concerned (and understandably so) some of the reactions to his sudden passing have been, I want to throw out there that this was a not uncommon possibility that it could be blood related.

RIP Lanny.
I remember a Prime Time against some asshole jobber called Crusher Capone who tried to get himself over and kicked out of Lanny's moonsault. Lanny, now forced to come up with something else, busts out a springboard somersault senton in the late 80s.
EDIT: Looked it up, June 2 1986. He hit a Swanton and a moonsault, Psycho Capone kicks out so Poffo busts out the springboard. He even had to wave the ref out the way because no one had any idea what he was going to do.

An Ode to Lanny Poffo, taken so tragically A man who’s wit and wisdom was renowned. In all the world of wrestling, a man to match his glibness, Or profundity with words could ere be found. His brother was a Savage, his father called The Miser, But Lanny chose to plot a different course. He kept them close at hand, but proved to be much wiser And never came across as rough or coarse. Whether managing or wrestling, He moved with grace and poise No other heel in wrestling, with such alacrity Could elicit from the crowd so much harsh noise So sleep now, Lanny Poffo, lord knows you’ve earned the rest For instructing all the masses with your verse. No other so called “ wrestling genius” could ever beat the best For none have such great poems to disperse! Rest in Peace, Lanny Poffo. I think he would have loved that. Share that with your favorite classic wrestling podcaster that knew Lanny (it seems most did to some extent).

The tributes to Lanny on his facebook page are quite something. It's a little beyond what normal tributes seem to be as the theme seems to be a lot of fans commenting that they met him at some point in their lives and would go on to be good friends with him, including one guy who Lanny invited to NYC to see him last weekend but he didn't go. You might not normally see tributes where almost everyone seems to have gone from fan to friend.

Just scrolled his Facebook page and came across this awesome yet sad story "Many years ago, Robin Williams asked Randy and Elizabeth for an autograph in a Japanese steakhouse in San Francisco, California. Robin was very polite but extremely nervous. Randy put him at ease and invited him and his entourage to our table. Within 10 minutes, Robin proved why he was known as one of the funniest men in the world. I have never laughed so hard in my life! Randy, Robin and Elizabeth have all passed on. I am the lone survivor and this is one of my favorite memories! Randy would’ve approved of Nubori Experience, perhaps the best Sushi Restaurant in Ecuador. He also would’ve appreciated this Venezuelan beauty! Ooooh Yeah!"

I remember reading that Robin Williams story. I'm surprised WWF/E never used him (unless he was a guest host during which time I wasn't watching). His type of comedy would fit right into a silly 1980s, 90s backstage skit. And he would be like a Bob Uecker or Leslie Nielsen that could make himself look silly for the sake of the project.
I am going to be posting a tribute to Lanny on John Crowther's facebook later. John was one of the many fans that got to know Lanny personally. John is probably best known for starting the wrestling comic book series with issue #1 being on Nikolai Volkoff. He most recently completed an autobiography on The Sheepherders/Bushwhackers. I didn't know Lanny personally but have seen so many pictures of he and John at shows when Lanny lived in Florida so I feel a big loss for him and his family.
There is a pretty great article on Lanny on "The Ringer" where John tells of Lanny's generosity which included his money from autograph signings going to children's charities.
