I'd like to take a moment to acknowledge just how strikingly good-looking the F1 grid is this year. I feel like they've finally nailed regulations that are both obviously high tech-looking while still being aesthetically pleasing and well-proportioned, with my counterpoint being the overly cluttered with aerodynamic doodad snowplow front wing era. Also helps that the liveries have become much more inspired and brought a lot more sponsors along.
I feel like the nadir of modern F1 aesthetics-wise was somewhere between 2012 and 2017 in terms of the overall look of the cars and the seeming effort put into the liveries.

Alonso could be one to keep an eye on today.
Who would have thought we would still be saying that in 2023?. ;D

Bit of contact between the Astons, and some random bodywork on track.

It's taken a little while, but Alonso is starting to make a move on Russell.
Verstappen out in front, possibly with a minor technical issue, Lando Norris also has a more serious sounding issue.

Ocon gets a 10 second penalty for not properly serving his 5 second penalty that he got for not being in the right spot at the start.
...and another 5 second penalty for speeding in the pit lane.

An easy win for Verstappen, an easy second for Perez, and a great third for Alonso.
The first part of the season looks like it'll be Red Bull out in front getting chased by Ferrari, Aston Martin, and the Mercs.

A nice point for Williams too, just after the boss said he had a harder job than expected to get them anywhere.
And of course, Gasly from the back to 9th.

I know it's only the first Race and we still got 22 more to go.
But I got a feeling this is going to be another run away season for Max.
I don't see the Title fight going all the way to Abu Dhabi.

St. Pete has been uncharacteristically... crashy, so far, today.
Also, re: the start crash, somebody might want to remind Benjamin Pederson that this is Indycar, not ARCA. Dude completely LeeRoy Jenkins'd it into the 29 car.

Aaaaand Grosjean and McLaughlin who've been dominating the race so far, just took each other out. My reaction face is about the same as Michael Andretti's right now. This is like, getting as bad as the end of the Daytona 500 was in terms of the attrition getting to the point that it's frustrating and momentum-killing.

Daniel Ricciardo must have a grin as big as Luna Park pocketing millions of dollars in severance and not having to drive that deadset hoopty of a McLaren this year.

No harm to the man, but I really resent Perez being where he is. Even Bottas was better. It's just absolutely dull when a top team has such an obvious #2. I don't really quite get the logic either because, although everyone is afraid of letting the #2 team sneak the WDC, if you can say "the two top drivers are here and fighting in equal cars" that brings major prestige to a team. Ron Dennis would have Lando Norris in that car and it would be exceptional.
Oh well, at least the battle for third will be good.

Daniel Ricciardo must have a grin as big as Luna Park pocketing millions of dollars in severance and not having to drive that deadset hoopty of a McLaren this year. Seriously. It's even more alarming when honestly none of the other midfield teams have looked as, well, *off* as McLaren has. It's been years since we've had the likes of Marussia and Caterham putzing around the rear, and I agree with the pundits that've said that the current formula has brought more parity to the overall field than there's been for ages. It just makes it more pronounced when a team misses their targets so badly as McLaren seems to have. Aside from that, I'm pretty sure pretty much nobody expected Aston Martin or Alonso to be as competitive as they've been, I'm surprised but not surprised the Ferraris look like they're still going to have the reliability of a Ford Tempo, and for as much as Mercedes has boo-hoo'd about missing their own development goals, they didn't look THAT bad out there.

McLaren blew it in Indycar too, with Pato O'Ward having a small explosion briefly suck the power out of the engine long enough for Marcus Ericsson to pass him for the win at St. Pete.

Jenson Button will become the latest former Formula 1 World Champion to have a go at NASCAR, running three races at COTA, Chicago and Indianapolis in the Rick Ware #15.
