Due to playing a particular character.
For me, I really couldn’t stand Micheal Kelso, and punk’d, and dude where’s my car. So it took me a while to warm up to Ashton Kutcher. But his surprisingly passionate crusade against human trafficking made me warm up to him.
Same could be said about Mika Kunis. She just came off like such a bitch in every show/movie she was in.
I had similar feelings towards Mindy Kaling and Aziz Ansari for their Office and Parks and rec characters.

For the first few years of his career I thought Brad Pitt was just a pretty boy whom whilst he may have had some charm, was lacking in the acting department. Then he had the double whammy of Seven and Twelve Monkeys and it all changed.
Jim Carrey is another. Every film was this rubber-faced OTT guy doing stupid voices (admittedly though some of it was funny). Then he made The Truman Show and it allowed him to do comedic stuff whilst reigning it in.
They aren’t specific characters but they kind of always played the same role.

Taron Egerton before Rocketman seemed like the kind of guy who can only do basic action movie characters.
Also Leonardo Di Caprio was certainly just a teenage heartthrob in Titanic and Beach.

It took me a long time to see Mark Wahlberg as anything other than Marky Mark.

For me I think an actor needs at least two good acting roles in order to "impress" me.
Tom Hardy was not in that boat for years. I liked him in Bronson, but every other role I saw him in just seemed like he was just saying lines, and not much else. However, while I didn't care for the movie itself, he definitely impressed me in The Revenant, and I think the Oscars got it wrong by giving it to wrong actor in the movie.
Another is Michael Shannon, who unfortunately seems to constantly be stuck getting "I'm a bad guy" roles, but while I found him kind of being at first, he ended up being the sole reason I continued to watch Boardwalk Empire, and honestly I would have gladly been happy if that show was just about him.
Lastly, Colin Farrell was just there for years, but now I find myself really enjoying anything he's done over the last 15 years, The Lobster notwithstanding.

Anyone from the Star Wars prequels. The Twilight trilogy too (I haven't seen The Batman yet).

Dave Bautista. I think he is a solid actor now, but at first.... I thought he was going to be horrible. I know he isn't quite as big as The Rock, but he might be better as an overall actor.

And I really didn’t feel he did a bad job as Edward, he mostly performed how the character’s writing allowed (especially given his disdain for the source material).

Leonardo DiCaprio. I first saw him in movies like Romeo & Juliet and Titanic, but The Departed really helped me take him serious.

Brad Pitt - I saw him as a male bimbo but in the same week saw him in Twelve Monkeys, Kalifornia, True Romance and Seven and thought he was amazing.
Alec Baldwin - he went from just being ‘an actor’ to being incredible in The Departed, 30Rock and GlenGarry GlenRoss.
Hugh Grant/Colin Firth - both have gone from being the bumbling/dashing British gent to doing some brilliant work in A Serious Man, The Undoing, The King’s Speech, A Very English Scandal, to name a few.

Matthew McConaughey. First I remembwr hearing about him was in a review of "A Time To Kill", where they said 'in a few years this guy is going to be really really good' (think it was Ebert). That made me think 'So, he's not good NOW but wait and see?', and I kinda ignored him for a while after that.
Seeing "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation" sure didn't help...

Probably the fact that McConaughey used to look like a young Hulk Hogan before he became a star didn't either:

I still kinda see Andy from Parks and Rec when I see Chris Pratt in action movies.
