I am watching the A&E rivals Austin/Rock where Vince announces Rock as the "world wrestling federation" champion. He clearly pronounces it correctly as "wrestling" but in the 80s and early 90s at least he called it "wrussling." Was he purposely saying it wrong under our belief he hates wrestling, looks down on wrestling fans? Or was it just an accent from birth. Did he have a speech therapist who helped him say it correctly?
I'm sure I'm overthinking this but as a kid it always fascinated me that he said it as "wrussling."

I'm guessing that's just the kind of change brought on by going from a regional promoter to the worldwide face of pro wrestling - pressure to drop the regional accent pronunciation.

Related, VKM did his best work when paired with Jusse the Body.

Related, VKM did his best work when paired with Jusse the Body. That’s because Jesse would just dunk on him every chance that he got so Vince had to be on his A game. LMAO.

I realized I spelled part of my title wrong. Not trying to dunk on Vince but was just curious.
I also remember him saying Jesse's name as a cross between Jesse and Jusse. And also very distinctly saying "Ruferee" for the ref. But it was more of an 80s thing now that I remember it. I feel like he had a speech class like 2005 Pink Panther Steve Martin to correct the more pronounced "U" in his speech.

I hate the way he says “brawl”. He leaves the l off and pronounces it “broar”.

To this day I am still shocked that the Vince from the late 70s, 80s and early 90s is even the same human being as the evil Mr. McMahon and the real life Vince McMahon we see now. The Academy Award or whatever for best actor should go to him. The real life Vince seems like pure evil and he played a guy who played something out of a 1960s and 70s wholesome Brady Bunch type show.

He is a southern boy that hates the south.
Plus all the time living in Connecticut, probably lost the southern accent into the 90s.

His pronunciation changes depending on which announcer voice he's using, I think. His play-by-play and his PPV-intro voices are very different, not just in pitch and volume. Then there's his normal speaking voice which is different also.

This seems like a good time to mention Vince's laugh.
HYAH HYAH HYAH HYAH HYAAAAH
It's also his chuckle, his snicker, and his titter.

When you live in another place, you gradually adapt your new home's accent while the old accent doesn't really go away.
I knew two people (childhood friend's mom and a college friend) who moved from the UK to New Jersey and were in this country for awhile. They both had a similar sounding in-between British-American accent.
Vince's was probably a similar between North Carolina and Connecticut.
