A lot of people collect things like comics, stamps, trading cards, etc, but does anyone collect stuff out of the norm?

Nothing I can think of currently, but when I was a little kid, I collected the twist-off tops from the plastic Kool-Aid bursts bottles you got at the grocery store. I thought they looked like little lobsters.

I used to collect menus. Most of the time the restaurant was cool with letting me have one. I usually didn't ask for one if they were laminated, but sometimes they had menus to go or for catering.
Unfortunately, I ended up getting rid of them when I was in high school, something I deeply regret like getting rid of my scrapbooks, stuff I can never get back.

Pez dispensers, started off with my mother for years grabbing ones for Easter/Halloween/Xmas.
Then I noticed I had kept them all. Now I got 400 or more. Usually on the mantel above the fireplace I put whatever Holiday ones fit for the month.
Nothing major in the collection. Might have a few that are over 20 bucks but I doubt it is more than 10 of them. Oldest is from early 70s.

Also, at the time it was very unusual to collect vintage video games, but then by the late 2000's it became quite the craze.
Thankfully, I bought most of my games before they went up to hundreds and hundreds of dollars.

Fingernails. You send me your fingernails and I'll send you some cash, remember, they're just fingernails, so don't expect much cash.

Reasonably obscure TTRPG rule books. I will buy that stuff just for the lore.

Also, at the time it was very unusual to collect vintage video games, but then by the late 2000's it became quite the craze. Thankfully, I bought most of my games before they went up to hundreds and hundreds of dollars. Back in summer of 1990,I was about to turn 16,went to visit a buddy and he showed me he had just found his old Atari 2600 and aabout 20 games in the closet at his mother's place. We hooked it up. And I told him I had close to 200 games at my place. Few nights later was a party at his place. We had the 2600 hooked up and learned no matter how trashed you get you can still play Atari. Everybody had so much fun we started going eveyr weekend to thrift, yard sales and junk stores buying up any Atari 2600 game we found. Was years before almost anyone was collecting old video games. Seen times where we asked at a yardsale if they had any,kid or teen rushes into house and comes out with a console a few controllers and a stack of carts. 5 minutes of negotiating and 5 bucks and we got us another system and more carts. When I shipped off for Army BCT on August 23rd 1992 we had over 300 different Atari games. At least 5 working systems. And piles of joysticks, paddle and even two trackball controllers. 4 years later my ARmy time is over. We now have close to 400 2600 games.Prices have slowly crept up. What use to be 25 to 50 cents a game is not buck to 5 bucks a game. A working console is no longer 5 bucks it is 20. Plus we had no idea what games were rare and what wasn't. We knew the Texas Chainsaw Massacre game we found was rare. Thought Pitfall II was rare. And any game we found with a copyright date after 84 we figured was rare. 2005 hits and buddy still has the Atari and the games. Hurricane Katrina is heading his way. He packs stuff and leaves. DIdn't check and didn't know his daughter forgot to pack the case with the atari stuff. Month or so later he comes back. His house is messed up badly. Roof had been lifted off moved south half a foot and dropped back on the home. Water was all over. The case the atari was in was underwater. But you know what. He dried out all the carts. Got a new system and most of the carts still worked. Now it feels like everyone under 40 collects retro games. And the 2600 is forgotten. Back then outside of the 10 of us buying the game we knew no one collecting old video games.

I used to collect hot sauce, and would display the empty bottles on a shelf in my apartment. I stopped when, at some point, I just wasn't able to tolerate the spice like I used to. Still have the bottles sitting around in a box somewhere.

I collect Scrooge McDuck stuff (which, admittedly, was a bit more unusual before 2017).
I also collect interesting books, magazines, and other media from the Showa period.

In college, I collected the twist-off caps from SoBe fruit drinks. Each one had a pop-culture reference printed under the cap; I had a whole bag of them and made a list of the sayings.

Strategy guides. I just think they're neat. Even though they may be considered obsolete with YouTube and other online guides I still get them on occasion. Especially for open world RPG games.
