This seems to have been a very successful trope in wrestling. Rock & Sock. Team Hell No. RK-Bro. Booker T & Goldust. William Regal & Eugene. Sami Zayn in the Bloodline.
Kane actually had multiple that were successful (X-Pac, Hurricane, RVD, Bryan).
What are instances were it didn't work out though? Like I don't think RVD and Ricardo Rodriguez was a pairing that worked at all.

Billy Gunn and Big Show
Billy Gunn and Hardcore Holly as a random tag title challenger for Rico and Haas.
Bradshaw and Taka for a little bite in 98.

Like I don't think RVD and Ricardo Rodriguez was a pairing that worked at all. Like I may have said, when they paired Ricardo and RVD, I thought it was completely random that they said that RVD was a friend of the Mexican people. Because it looked so random that a guy like RVD would be a friend of the Mexican people and this is when I knew of RVD’s drug habits. Later on, I made the connection. It was a big inside joke considering Mexico’s and RVDs reputation with drugs.

Do Golden Truth count? Because they stunk. We did get Breezango out of the angle, and they certainly didn't stink.

Do Golden Truth count? Because they stunk. I’m surprised they haven’t gotten a Wrestlecrap induction yet. When there’s no straight man and you have two wacky characters, the dynamic isn’t there.

Do Golden Truth count? Because they stunk. I wonder if they wouldn't have been so bad if it hadn't taken just short of 49 years for the team to actually form. The angle beforehand was absolutely glacial.

Didn't Goldust have like a brief heel run after that and it was dropped fairly quickly? Probably. Late WWE Goldust was an exercise in booking having no idea what they wanted to do with him, outside of recognizing at least that he was a solid wrestler they wanted to use for *something*, so he bounced from one weak angle to another.

Didn't Goldust have like a brief heel run after that and it was dropped fairly quickly? Yeah. He went back to his more basic mid-90s facepaint too, but it only went for like two televised matches before he was tangentially involved in the Finn Balor/Bray Wyatt feud.

I get what they were trying for, but Darren Young and Bob Backlund together wasn't any good.
I am glad Fred Rosser (Darren Young) has been have a pretty solid past couple of years. He put in the work to get back on track after the final stretch of his WWE career was botched so badly from a booking standpoint.

Steve Blackman had success in getting Head Cheese over, but failed in his follow up with Grandmaster Sexay
On a similar note, Scotty 2 Hotty and Albert the Hip Hop Hippo.

Hugh Morrus and Konnan were a regular team that got a pretty good push in mid 97 right before Konnan joined the nWo. Basically the whole late era Dungeon of Doom were a smattering of random dudes who had WCW couldn't seem to decide how much they wanted to push.

He put in the work to get back on track after the final stretch of his WWE career was botched so badly from a booking standpoint. I'll admit while the "Make Darren Young Great Again" segments were pretty dumb(and as stated on air, when was Darren Young ever great), they actually had a goldmine on their hands until they screwed it up in typical WWE fashion. Young won a battle royal via fluke(he was part of the final three, and the other two eliminated each other) and even got over for all of 2 weeks. He then faced Miz for the IC championship that ended in a no contest and was pushed down the card accordingly. Even feuding with his former partner and fellow mostly jobber Titus O'Neil before being phased out and quietly released. Seriously what is so hard about following through on his underdog push? If he didn't win the IC title at the PPV, have him continue chasing it and upset The Miz shortly thereafter and have a 3 month reign as champ, barely scraping by(and with Backlund's help) in the process. It's shit like this that makes me think WWE goes out of their way to piss off fans. They make a potential star that fans are willing to accept than they do what they can to reverse it because no ones allowed to get over when the script tells not to.
