Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Reigns kept the belt. They seem so focused on reaching whatever arbitrary number of days as champion at the moment, and they're almost at 1,000. I could see them shrugging and saying "why not" instead of belting up Cody here. I also don't think it even really matters, because it's not like their business success depends on who's pushed as champion anymore. How can something be considered an objectively bad decision when it will have absolutely no negative impact if they steer away from it?

I think Cody’s overall blandness will shine through eventually and derail this all on his own. He’s still just a mid-card act. There’s nothing wrong with that. He’s not the guy to carry the company.

Vince decides Cody would be the perfect face for the new more expensive Network spinoff NXT Club and sends him off to fight Bron Breakker.

I'm not sure Rock is the only person this is true of though. I think they'd do the same for Austin as well. And if it was Vince and he could move I'm not 100% sure he wouldn't do that for Hogan. That would be a way to derail things though. Reigns wins by cheating and Hogan comes out to avenge Rhodes and wins the title. Austin maybe? No way for Hogan though even if Vince has/had full control. The Hogan part was with the caveat that Hogan could still go. So say it was like 2004 or something.

I mean, it's objectively not true that he's still just a midcard guy. Midcard guys don't get their merch sold on a consistent basis or had people watching the show with the implication he might appear around this time last year. That just doesn't happen that often (besides the exceptions of Ryder, Rusev etc that the company didn't capitalize on for one reason or another). Simple fact is that the Cody we have now is the best fully baked, realized babyface WWE has had in literal years. You don't need to tweak much of him to make him work in a setting where the others have to have some kind of edge and do things that feel out of character like your Cenas or even Roman at a time (unless you consider spiking a woman's drink and making her vomit the pure definition of a good guy). Which is why this is basically WWE's to screw up. Roman will do his thing, Cody will do his, HHH/Vince/Bill Watts/Whoever is in charge this week needs to just have the story cross the finish line without stumbling on the wire and there's not a zero percent chance that happens.

Not only does Roman defeat him, he strips him down to his underwear, burn his ring gear in a metal trash can, then gives him a suit signaling that Cody has retired and goes on to a normal everyday life.

Only if Roman absorbs his powers. What powers does Cody have? What powers, you ask? I dunno, how 'bout the power of flight? That do anything for ya? That's levitation, holmes. How 'bout the power to kill a yak from 200 yards away...WITH MIND BULLETS?! That's telekinesis, Kyle. How 'bout the power to move you?

But would A-Train derailing the Cody/Roman program ruin the Lord Tensai gimmick?

Only if Roman absorbs his powers. What powers does Cody have? Superhuman neck tattoo and the ability to mention Dusty Rhodes is his father?

Only if Roman absorbs his powers. What powers does Cody have? Roman's hair starts to bleach out and a giant shitty tattoo appears on his neck.

Based on what? Announcing him late for certain house shows literally moved thousands of tickets and set record gates for those arenas. His merch sales have been terrific, selling out during Rumble weekend (and shows since then). Ratings have been up since his return, with his segments among the highest rated. Everybody says WWE is hot now and a lot of that is the Bloodline, but the company started getting hot with last year’s Mania where his return was a major happening (that and the Austin match but that was just one weekend and then Austin was gone).

A double turn during the match where Heyman interferes on behalf of Cody and causes him to win the belt via outside interference.

Saying Cody is a midcard act is just not accurate. He continually gets cheers every week. Only Sami Zayn gets as much cheers as Cody does.
