So, long story short, I accepted a new gig as a broadcast manager for a trio of local channels out here and I want to start playing some late night public domain classics.
I have 1957's 'The Beginning of the End' slated to run Saturday at 8 PM in honor of Bert I Gordon, and I thought I turn here to see which classics (intentional or otherwise) I should throw into the mix?

Nosferatu, watched it two years ago, got me into silent films.

This is a pretty good resource detailing public domain movies as well as how to get access to high quality versions of them: www.fesfilms.com/cafe-roxy/video-masters.htmlAs for individual recommendations The Head (1959) is a weird West German oddity. It recently had a Blu-ray restoration in Germany by Anolis.

So apparently the original Debbie Does Dallas is considered public domain. Just throwing that out there.

Its a cartoon film, but the Gullivers Travels that they used to play on WCIU on Thanksgiving when I was a kid was a damn good film! Thanks Fleischer Studios!

Running through the list of public domain movies on Wikipedia, I think Reefer Madness is a must... along with Plan 9 From Outer Space. House On Haunted Hill, Bucket Of Blood, and Little Shop Of Horrors would be great. I've seen Carnival Of Souls and it's good but niche.

Both House on Haunted Hill and The Last Man on Earth are on that list. Do a Vincent Price Double Feature!

It's a cliche to say it, perhaps, but Night of the Living Dead holds up.

There are ton of public domain animated shorts I love, but as far as movies go, Nosferatu and Night of the Living Dead.

As far as I'm concerned, you can never go wrong with some Bela Lugosi! Stuff like THE APE MAN, THE DEVIL BAT, WHITE ZOMBIE, THE GORILLA (a comedy featuring The Ritz Brothers), GHOSTS ON THE LOOSE (with the East Side Kids).

Night of the Living Dead Reefer Madness, one of the most hilarious unintentional comedies I ever watched.

So apparently the original Debbie Does Dallas is considered public domain. Just throwing that out there. Oh snap, really? So, between midnight and 5 AM we can have swearing and show nudity BUT we can't show penetration... ...yet, since this is public domain, my wheels are turning in terms of making a FCC fully Broadcast Compliant version of Debbie Does Dallas. hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

There are some genuine masterworks in the public domain. Night of the Living Dead and The General and Nosferatu off the top of my head. I’ve also always loved Carnival of Souls.

So if they are made pre 78 they are public domian. The issue is some of the better known ones are "owned" by companies that may or may not have connections to a organization that "doesn't exist". Don't Look in the Basement is a good PD horror. Real grimy sleazy feeling film. Fury of the Wolfman and Werewolve vs the Vampire Women are two decent Paul Naschy Euro horrors that are PD. The Devil's Nightmare is a great Euro Horror that is PD,same with Lady Frankenstein. The issue with lots of the above ones is finding decent prints. I have at least 10 dvds with Dont Look in the Basement to finally have one that doesn't look like a 5th gen VHS dub.
