Read an article about how more food service companies offer the option to tip at checkout.
Do you tip and is there a cut off (some places you don't tip)?
I tip minimum 15% at sit down restaurants where the tip goes to the waiter/server (more when I'm in states with ridiculous minimum wage for tipped jobs).
I generally don't tip at fast food places because the tips (as far as I know) go to the cashier who's just working a register. We don't tip cashiers in any other setting so it doesn't make sense to me.
I generally tip Uber and Lyft drivers unless the ride is really bad or the driver is unsafe.
Definitely not a Mr. Pink but I feel a lot of jobs nowadays are expecting tips that don't provide a service that justifies it.
Curious to see how everyone here feels.

Sigh..such a hotbed of a topic.
Generally, at minimum, I’ll tip a Buck or two. If it’s great service, or I feel someone’s going out of their way, I’ll tip more. And if someone’s a dick or egregiously bad? I just don’t tip.
Also, I hate the new “turn tablet around and being forced right then and there to tip” thing. They’ve been doing it a lot. At Starbucks I’ve noticed I’d tip way more when there was just a jar. Feels like it puts you on the spot.
My buddy (who tipped a lot) used to put a stack of bills on the table upon arriving and either add or decrease.
I’ve only worked one job that had tips: Coldstone. And I used to genuinely ask ppl to not do it because I died a little every time I sang one of those stupid songs.

I’m a bartender so I mainly work for tips but businesses are getting out of hand with paying too many workers tipped wages knowing they’re fleecing them over it. Most takeaway employees make Jack crap on third party delivery orders but that makes up most of our delivery business since my current store doesn’t have their own drivers like my last one. They used to give them a certain amount per order but did away with it post-Covid…and I’m sure are pocketing all that extra money. It also lets the business claim a tax credit as long as they’re making enough tips to make minimum wage. In all honesty it’s bullshit considering the garbage they go through.

I don't eat in restaurants anymore since the pandemic, but I do have stuff delivered. I tip extra during holidays, but otherwise I usually tip at a minimum $4 or $5, depending on how much I can afford at the time.

If you can afford to eat out or order delivery then you can afford to leave a good tip.

Live too far out to get anything delivered.
Never used Uber, hell I haven't used a taxi cab since I was in the Army decades ago.
I tip at sit down places. I tip whoever cuts my hair a bit. But I have noticed more and more of the local stand in line get your food and leave places inside gas stations are asking if you want to "round up your price as a tip". First time I saw thi I did it. Was 55 cents or so. Then talked to a friend that worked at the place. "Yea that tip goes to whoever the manager is that shift." Confrimed this and yea not tipping there.
Now when I lived where I could get food delivered, whicch was close to 20 years ago,I would give the driver 3 bucks. But the places I ordered from were at the most 5 blocks from my home. I was just too lazy to walk up there and get my food.
Now a bar,I will check out how the bartender is treating people and tip according to that. But last time I was in a bar was last year. I bought 2 beer and gave the bartender 2 bucks with whatever those 2 beer cost.
The times I do eat out where I feel I should tip I ask my girl how much. She worked as a waitress for a long time before she finished her degree and always tips well.

My first job was a restaurant, so I’ll always tip well. It’s been 20% for years.

My first job was a restaurant, so I’ll always tip well. It’s been 20% for years. That is how my girl is. She worked as a waitresss thru high school and college. If I am by myself I usually try to ffigure out what 15% is and leave that. Unless I just get bad service from the wait staff. Then I leave a buck and that is it. Wish that wait jobs paid normal per the hour. So the staff didnt have to hope each customer at least left some tips. But doesnt appear that is changing ever here in the States. Back in the late 90s ,while waiting for a position to open up at the place I wanted to work,I worked at a gas station for close to 2 years. Had one co worker that if someone told her ot keep the change she would do just that. Keep the change and put it in a cup. At the end of her shift she took the change with her. "They are tipping me" was her logic. And hell I didn't care. Even once I was made swing manager I didn't care. It was 10 to 25 cents tops and a good shift she might make 2 bucks....

As someone who has spent their entire working career in food service (be it BOH, FOH or management) so when it comes to tipping in restaurants or bars I tip anywhere from 25-35% and sometimes depending on the situation I'll go even higher. If it's delivery it varies but they'll always get something. I also tip for most services, car mechanic, pet groomer, barber, etc I'll always give a tip. I don't tip at fast food but that's because I honestly haven't seen or been asked for tips there.
Some quick restuarant tipping knowledge for those who have never worked in the industry; your server isn't pocketing that whole tip, they'll need to tip out bussers, runners, if its a restaurant with a bar the bartenders and then depending on the server and the establishment dishwashers and possibly line cooks.

I always tip. Even bad service, I tip, albeit I tip less generously. Like anything I'd consider straight-up not tipping for is the kind of thing someone would probably outright get fired for, so it's never been to that point.
I've had too many friends who worked in service jobs to not do it, since tips can really make or break them.

With contactless becoming very prevalent, has that effected tipping in the USA much?

The stack of bills on the table was the plot of an episode of Third Rock From the Sun where the main alien didn't get the idea of tipping.
I generally tip 15%. If my total is low or service is great I'll go higher. Bad service, probably 10%. Tipping is a broken system but it's the one we have in Canada/The US so I try to tip. For delivery drivers it's 10-15%, depending on how much I'm paying in driver fees.

I generally tip big at sit down places or delivery.
If at a fast food or theater register and it gives you the option to tip through your card, don't bother -- workers never see that $.

I braced for the worst but I'm so, so glad that this thread is going much better here than it did a decade ago.
20% minimum whether sit down or delivery. If it's something where it's complicated (I have tree nut allergies and sometimes I need them to check ingredients) I bump up to 25%.
At least once a year when I've had really, really good service I like to tip 40%. If someone's been truly above and beyond outstanding (like being super attentive an on-it when it's busy) I'm happy to help make their day.

With contactless becoming very prevalent, has that effected tipping in the USA much? Well put it this way. Uncle Sam sure is loving the fact cash tip jars got replaced with digital tipping.
