Obviously Glenn Jacobs had a few different gimmicks before they landed on Kane.. but is Kane as a character the most successful example of this? As far as I know the character was literally born just to be a foe for The Undertaker, who would eventually "win" the feud. Kane got over like rover and was able to stick around for an entire career. I can't think of any other example of that happening off the top of my head.

Yeah, probably so, since the character of Kane was so strongly linked to Undertaker. Guys like Mankind had been brought in to deal with 'Taker, too, but nothing about his backstory made it where the two were tied up with another, whereas you could not really get into who Kane was as a character without Undertaker being part of it.

Mickie James. She evolved beyond that character, but so did Kane.

Probably not AS successful, but my mind immediately went to Molly Holly. Brought in to be a cousin to Bob and Crash, and carried that through the rest of her career.

I’m struggling to even think of many other examples, much less successful examples.

A bit of a stretch, but Batista debuted as Reverend D-Von's deacon. I have no idea what the thought process and expectations were, but he outgrew it without a name change.

It's not really the same thing, but Owen Hart could be an example. Yeah, he was there, though never really acknowledged as Bret's brother. He was doing sweet f*** all, then was out with injury and would be seen in the crowd cheering Bret on, SummerSlam 93 being a notable example, then at Bret's request brought in to be the brother who turned on him for that storyline. WWF was originally going with Bruce Hart.

I think Christian was brought in as a dark figure from Edge's past to feud with him under Gangerel's influence (who was also hinted to have history with Edge) Edge joining the Brood, revealing Christian was his brother (until he wasn't) and going on to team with Christian for the next 3-4 years was IMO a change of plan after Christian had debuted.

Does anyone remember Marty Janetty for anything but his involvement with Shawn?
