How about we don't ever do anything involving a Skywalker ever again. The universe has more stories to tell that have nothing to do with this one family. Let's tell those stories. So a story about how a young Shmi Skywalker secretly became the Pirate Queen of the Outer Rim for a brief period of time wouldn't interest you? I'm tired of Skywalkers. If I see another Star Wars anything about someone named Skywalker for the rest of my life, it will be too soon.

What is on Tatooine anyway? There's no natural resources or valuables on it. It's just a giant rock filled with sand and dirt, it's a wonder Vader didn't have The Imperial Fleet pound and bombard it to dust. Tatooine itself is the valuable resource. It's a nexus point for the galaxy's three major trade routes. Tatooine is basically space Shanghai. Not having read any EU stuff... I hate this. Like, the whole point of Luke being kn Tatooine was it was remote, the arse end of nowhere. Such a barren, boring place has a MOISTURE farmer, they need an industry to get enough liquid to survive. It's the far end of the galaxy so there's no law, gangsters can run things. Then you gey the Vader reveal, it still works because it's so out of the way you could hide a Jedi and Vaders kid and no-one would ever think to go there its so nothing. Then it becomes Vaders home, ok maybe he's so traumatised he never wants to go back but it becomes more implausible. Every new story and layer of importance added to Tatooine removes more and more sense from it. If its a point on 3 trade routes, you'd expect it to be bustling, major imperial presence not spme barren scorched rock.

Tatooine is valuable to crime syndicates like the Hutts and the Pykes because it's such a shithole. Perfect place to do underhanded shit.
As for why the Empire doesn't just annex it: it's in Hutt Space. There actually was a heavier Imperial presence on Tatooine after Episode IV, but only because they had a loose alliance with Jabba. There was also a battle during the Galactic Civil War between Episodes IV and V where the Alliance had a pretty decisive victory over Imperial forces stationed there.

I'd love to see a low-key "American Graffiti in Space" coming-of-age story about Luke and Biggs as teens getting into trouble, racing speeders, going on dates, and stuff like that, but most people would hate it because they expect everything Star Wars to be epic and high-stakes.
