This is probably more of an old man yelling at clouds, but whenever I try to listen to top 40 or a new music list, everything feels really bland and low energy. It all just runs together with nothing to catch my attention. I enjoy several fairly disparate genres but yeah, it's just kind of there. Most of my exposure to new pop music comes from watching Saturday Night Live. A lot of the time I feel like the musical guest is about to shift into a higher gear...and then the song just ends. I don't get it. That accurately sums up how I feel about Billie Eilish. I know it's her gimmick, but it's ok not to have every song be low-energy depression porn. Also, my own personal musical hot take - Taylor Swift hasn't released good music since "Lover" in 2019. You can look at each of her albums as an era of sorts - her self-titled debut and "Fearless" were a young country artist discovering herself, "Speak Now" was her breaking into the mainstream, "Red" and "1989" was her crossing over into pop and becoming an icon in the process, "Reputation" is a darker side, dealing with the struggles associated with fame, and "Lover" was lighter, poppier fare. But since then, all of her albums have blended together into this sort of amalgam folk/pop/country hybrid (that also totally rips off Lana Del Ray's sound) and seemingly is written exclusively about heartbreak. Again, as I said with Billie Eilish, not every song has to be low-energy depression porn.

Another Hot take from me: Adele is a one trick pony who's been increasingly less interesting since her debut album.

I said this a couple of pages. Her shtick is no different to Alison Moyet's in the eighties... and Moyet did it WAY better.

- the Loudness War is something only total dweebs notice of care about. I think this is true but only to a point. "This album only has a dynamic range of 10, and the minimum I'll accept is DR 13!" is indeed dweeby bullshit. That said, I do find albums like Black Gives Way to Blue, or anything Metallica has put out over the past two decades, to be genuinely fatiguing to listen to.

I think its a masterpiece... however there's nothing she does or says on the second album that hadn't already been said already, and there's no need for it.
A lot of female pop music falls in some weird Billie / Lana / Taylor hybrid these days. Some of it I enjoy (New Paramore, Olivia Rodrigo) most of it rather forgettable.

Twisted Sister is a very underrated band likely due to their era and look. Some seriously tasty riffage and Dee Snider can sing.

The Gin Blossoms are so underrated. I hate that they get backlash for kicking out Doug Hopkins. He was gonna drag the band down with him and his addiction. And like, it wasn't even Gin Blossoms' fault that Doug got fired. label basically gave them an ultimatum. It sucks that it happened but it's really unfair to act like they somehow just stole his songs and kicked him to the curb with smiles on their faces like some people seem to believe.

I mean, I'm gonna take "Don't Go" over pretty much anything Adele has done 10 times out of 10. And I don't even hate Adele.

New Order are the Kings of Bad Lyrics. Did The Beatles suddenly stop existing? Their legacy and influence is undeniable, but their lyrics are some of the most inane drivel I've ever heard in my life.

I like all 3 of the Nightwish lead vocalists equally. By the time I was introduced tonight wish they were on their second vocalist I think? The album was imaginaerium. I never felt particularly strongly about who was best. Each fit the band in their own way.

Train have ludicrously bad lyrics. That's not a hot take, I guess, though, in that I've seen people who are fans admit some of the songs are pure gibberish. New Order are the Kings of Bad Lyrics. To be fair when Ian lost his battle with mental health they lost their main songwriter who was really good. They then just wrote whatever stuff and lacked the punch Ian had

This is less of a "hot take" and more of a question from someone who's rap tastes tend to trend in the retro direction: Does Chance The Rapper suck? I ask because I heard him do a guest verse on a song on the radio the other day, and it was.....some of the worst flow I've ever heard, genuinely. He seems like a nice, charismatic guy, but man, if that's indicative of his larger body of work....woof.

The final four Sonic Youth albums, Murray Street, Sonic Nurse, Rather Ripped and The Eternal, are an amazing run up there with any of their classic 80s/early 90s stuff.

Deathcore is not a genre. It's just death metal that has breakdowns. Pretending that it's a different genre at this point is childish, stupid and just a way for a bunch of old geezer metalheads to other and gatekeep millenials and zoomers.
While on the subject, Periphery are right; Djent is not a genre and it's the most useless descriptor of a band's sound that's ever existed. Even worse than just saying Candlemas and Eyehategod are both doom metal.
