Yeah yeah, I know these threads are fairly frequent, but being a professional musician and lifelong music devotee, I love to hear the crazy things others think about the subject.
For me, I'll start with one inspired by the Prince thread:
Prince is probably the most talented musician to ever live who also makes incredibly boring and largely forgettable music. Like, he can write a decent chorus, but outside of that, his songs are basically just...there. And as a drummer, they are unforgivably dull. I genuinely could never hear a Prince song again and not feel like I'm missing a thing. Frankly, I'm not even sure I would notice.
Another: Despite being cringey as f*** and starting fights with people he REALLY shouldn't, Machine Gun Kelly has done more to bring about the resurgence of pop-punk and rock as a whole than anyone not named Dave Grohl in at least 20 years. While other bands were content to stand back and bitch, MGK actually did something about it. He's also inspired more kids to pick up guitars than dweebs like Joe Bonamassa or Polyphia ever will.
Alright, what do you guys have?

Kanye West has the absolute worst lyrics of any rapper ever I'll go even further and say he is among the most ridiculously overrated figures in music history, and has some of the worst, most delusional hardcore fans ever. Want to have some fun? The next time one of those fans is talking about Kanye being a genius and an innovator, ask them to explain why. Ask for 1 single thing Kanye ever did that was new or revolutionary, 1 thing he invented or pioneered. The amount of non-answers you'll get like "not my job to educate you" or "read about it" is unbelievable. They've just heard him say it so many times, they parrot it with absolutely nothing to point to to prove it.

I count Oh Brother Where Art Thou as a musical, no matter what anyone else says.

Foo Fighters > Nirvana
Beyonce is talented. She seems like a really stand up person. That said, she's insanely overrated

Nirvana were the 4th best of the big 4 Seattle grunge bands in the early 90s. That's not to say they weren't great but I just like the other 3 a little more. I understand this is generally unpopular and purely personal preference but I only like about 4-5 Beatles songs. Every few years I go back and attempt to get into them but they've never clicked for me like the Stones/Zeppelin/Floyd etc. Kanye West has the absolute worst lyrics of any rapper ever I'll go even further and say he is among the most ridiculously overrated figures in music history, and has some of the worst, most delusional hardcore fans ever. I've been finished with Kanye for years, both because his music went to shit and well, all that other stuff, but he was absolutely super influential and had a great run. Genius is a term I'd use for like people who find breakthroughs in medicine though, not entertainment stuff. Even if he never released a single song he'd be one of the most important figures in modern music due to his production credits. He helped craft classic albums for Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Pusha T, Common, Scarface, Common, Rihanna, Beyonce, Mos Def, Talib Kweli just to name a few. As far as his own music, College Dropout, Late Registration, Graduation, MBDTF and Watch the Throne are some of the greatest albums of the last 20 years. A lot of people would say 808s too but I personally never liked that. Even Yeezus, Pablo and Kids See Ghosts which are mid-tier by older Kanye standards would be absolute standouts in a lot of artist discographies.

Coldplay are awesome.
Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale is fine. It’s not horrible and it’s not the Greatest Thing Ever either. I still think DAMN is far and way still his peak work.
There’s some “mumble rap” out there with damn good melodies and song structure if one’s willing to look hard enough.
Miles Davis’ most interesting musical period was his 70s and 80s electric funk.
MCR are one of the best rock bands of their era and they’re probably Hall Of Fame bound assuming no incidents. Same with Fall Out Boy, another megagroup tarred with the “LOL they so eMo” brush.
I love Eminem but Revival was so bad enough to where I feel it disqualifies him from GOAT status.
Some of J Cole’s feature verses are better than his main songs.
It’s in the shadow of Michael’s prior three albums but Dangerous is low key one of the greatest pop albums of all time, or certainly of the early 90s.

Nickelback are not a bad group. They're bland as all hell yes, and feel like the musical equivalent to rice cake, but antipathy towards them is far more of a meme than active dislike.

Even Yeezus, Pablo and Kids See Ghosts which are mid-tier by older Kanye standards would be absolute standouts in a lot of artist discographies. But being popular and influential, or even good at your craft, doesn't make you an innovator or a genius, and that's what I take issue with. George Martin was an innovator and a genius. He reinvented the way music could be made and presented. Some of the most standard things you can do with the click of a button in Pro Tools exists because George Martin created the technique with tape and imagination. Les Paul was an innovator and a genius. He literally invented multitrack recording, making everything George Martin and everyone since accomplished possible. He also invented the modern electric guitar, and was a master musician. The Beatles were innovators and geniuses. They pushed the boundaries of popular music to the point of not only being able to lay claim to writing some of the most enduring, groundbreaking songs of all time, but they changed the entire course of pop culture. Kanye has done none of these things, or even anything similar. He's a good producer who made some good albums, and then coasted for 10 years off his antics while his musical output declined rapidly. He's good, maybe even great at times, but he is absolutely NOT innovative or genius.

I’ll say Chad Kroeger has a strong singing voice. Hero and Into The Night go hard, and I actually like If Everyone Cared.

Andrew Lloyd Webber is really lucky he got carried to a few decent musicals by more talented collaborators- Oh, wait, not that kind of musical hot take.
Pulp were the best of the Britpop big 3 in the 90s despite never really getting the acclaim of Blur and Oasis.
If there were any justice in the world, it'd be the Pandora's Box version of 'It's All Coming Back To Me Now' that got remembered and not Celine Dion's, her vocals pale in comparison to Elaine Caswell.
There'll never be a day that I'm not thankful that Fairytale Of New York never got the UK Christmas No 1 slot, beaten to the spot by an altogther more talented band in the Pet Shop Boys.

It Was Written is one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time and not some massive step down after Illmatic.

He's a local here but I agree. I've never really been a Bon Jovi fan. Though Jon Bon Jovi does a lot of good for the poor and homeless populations of the area, so I'll always have a lot of respect for him as a person.

The Now Now is one of the top three Gorillaz albums.
Oasis is boring.
Elton John’s “A Single Man” was supposedly during his dark age but it’s actually pretty fun.
Future is a GOAT of his era and should go into the Rock and Roll HOF.
Poison were a GOAT of their era and should go into the Rock and Roll HOF.
Disco Demolition Night didn’t “kill” or even wound disco. Michael Jackson’s Off The Wall was a major hit shortly after the riot on the field and that had tons of disco elements. There’s still traces of disco when I listen to early 80’s dance, like Sky’s “Call Me”. I think when Human League dropped “Don’t You Want Me” was when the new wave influence really became mainstream and then disco went away until the revivals. (And the whole thing wouldn’t even have happened if the White Sox in 1979 weren’t a trash team with the worst uniforms of all time.)
Drake isn’t a particularly impressive MC or singer, but he knows how to project a ton of charisma in his songs and that’s why IMO he got so big.

Tupac was meh at best. Without the beats he had nothing.
Pink Floyd,The Eagles and Led Zep were crap. Many many better bands from that era. But nope gotta play these three turds over and over for the past 50 years.
Into the Unknown is a good album.
The Spaghetti Incident>Use your Illusion 1 and 2.
Kelly Rowland is 100 times more talented than Beyonce.
