I have an unpopular opinion on WCW Champ David Arquette: it wasn't THAT bad of an idea. And it was kind of fun the way they did it until he turned on DDP and SWERVE IT WAS OUR PLAN ALL ALONG!! Had Arquette accidently won the title back for Jarrett at Slamboree instead, it wouldn't been fine and a silly, but harmless few week storyline to try and pop a PPV buyrrate and promote their new movie. The idea isn't terrible. It's the ending and execution that sucked. Seeing that DDP was champion when Arquette won the title, Page looked like a total f***ing doofus for celebrating with him after the matchYeah, if you don't want him to be a sore loser, that's one thing, but at least have him look conflicted about it. I feel like this whole thing, though, could have been done with the TV title and probably garnered as much mainstream attention.

sorry but I dont want to give either Russo or Bubba sponge ad revenue. This. Also, WCW had a Hardcore and TV title they literally treated like trash. If they wanted the free publicity, they could have just given David one of those titles. It's not like any hollywood writer who they wanted attention from would know the difference

They could've had the storyline be that Arquette won the title tag match by mistake. DDP is pissed, but they're friends so he tries to let it go with the agreement that Arquette is going to try to help him get it back in the Slamboree cage match and then it goes awry.

Considering what I know now, David Arquette donated all his earnings as champ to the families of Owen Hart, Brian Pillman and others, what happened is ok. Former World Heayweight Champion. Vince Russo is still an out-of-touch racist, also a homphophe, and and general piece of trash, bro.

What's funny about Russo defending it is... even David Arquette knew it was a terrible idea.
But he wanted to be a team player about advertising the movie... and as said he donated all the earnings to families of Owen Hart and Pillman and maybe Bulldog?
But still...

Ready To Rumble was mostly out of movie theaters by the time Arquette won title. My Aunt and Uncle took me to go see it a couple of days after it came out despite it being a Friday at 8:00 pm the theater was mostly empty.

I've said it before, I'll say it again, pictures in newspapers and some mainstream media coverage are nice, but unless Russo can point to a single way that giving Arquette the title help make the company money (ticket sales, PPV buys, ratings, merchandise, whatever), something to offset the audience he was alienating by doing it, then it was a complete and abject failure.

There are days I envy Russo. Not only did he get wealthy by ******* around as he pleased on national tv, but to be that obliviously self deluded must be blissful.

Does anybody find it hilarious that DSOTR is going to cover another bad Russo idea this year(BATB 2000) when they covered another bad idea of his in the past.(Brawl For All)

Even David Arquette knew it was a bad idea. He understood wrestling better than the booker.

INB4 he blames Tony Schiavone who was obviously joking when he suggested it.

I don't understand why Russo can't just say something like "look, things in WCW were going south fast, so I did something crazy to try to get some eyes on the product. It didn't work out, live and learn". Instead every time he talks he insists on re-litigating every one of his many failed ideas in the hope that he convinces somebody, anybody, that he is the unappreciated genius that saved wrestling that he thinks he is.

WCW with its money for sure could have bought some legit though celebrity for a week or two. As a matter of fact I think they had a better chance at landing Tyson than WWF did but no one has though of that. Casting Rodman was awesome idea. Casting Leno was crap. DA was a fan who turned into wrestler so him being on a show was always a bonus but not the way it played out. I'm sorry but that was like hiring Ross from Friends and slapping a belt on him.
Idea to have a celebrity as a champ for few weeks to build up PPV: A+++ Execution of that idea in WCW: C-

Believe it was Harts, Pillman and Droz. Least that’s what I have always heard.

Believe or not he's got a lot of people fooled into thinking he can wrestling back to attitude era levels of popularity. He definitely fooled Dixie Carter. youtu.be/xsbtIOD0mYM

Dusty Rhodes was pro wrestling patron saint of bad booking before Russo came along, but, outside some joke segments, Dusty never got hung-up on his failed ideas and constantly argued about his responsibility for their failure to anybody who would listen. I never heard him say "'lissen Daddy, Da Shockmasta coulda bin the bigges' thang WCW eva saw if they would have only let me run the storyline to its logical conclusion, bro."
