The last strike was hell and I feel like the TV landscape is even worse now. Talk shows just going completely dark is telling, I remember when Conan spun his wedding ring to try and beat a record to fill time, and we might get to that point again. I don't think wrestling will be effected too badly, but shows like SNL? Yeah, that's already hurting them.
I remember when the 07 strike killed shows eventually, Spectacular Spider-man is one that's still brought up. I shudder to think what other great shows could end or be killed if this strike goes on too long, but ultimate, if production shuts down as well in June, the big studios and millionaires have no one to blame but themselves
And anyone peddling this AI nonsense are only making the situation worse, these idiots keep peddling "AI Advancements" completely unaware that it looks like the car Homer Simpson built every time...

But let me get serious...I am of two minds, as I am with most things. And it doesn't help that this country is heading towards 1860s caliber again, if you know what I mean, and if it isn't there now. Meaning that I got people on both sides who are trying to be equally convincing. Anyway, of course I want to see the people whose work I admire doing what they do best. I want to have time with the characters and worlds I love. But I also know the people behind those need to get what they want too. Okay, this goes for everyone: please stop the vague allusions to politics. Thanks.

Have a feeling that the fall tv season won't start til after the World Series this year, Fox may ask to have almost the entire LCS they got on bog Fox. Maybe see the NBA opening week national tv games being simulcast on ABC (For ESPN) and CBS (For TNT) plus movie packages on CBS, NBC and ABC on sundays. We may see anime air in primetime in the states Demon Slayer (it'll have to be edited heavily to comply with FCC decency standards) or My Hero Academia for example Anime can barely get an hour and a half on Toonami every Saturday night, I'd be shocked to see it ever make it on broadcast television. Yeah, and when they used to publicly release their ratings the Saturday slots were always way lower than any other time.

Disney killed the Spectacular Spider-man, wanting to do their animation in house. IT also is the reason things like Heroes tanked, because season 2 was basically killed by the strike and not mention Quantum of Solace which had a bare bones script and apparently Daniel Craig said he wrote the majority of himself... (which kinda explains how like nothing f***ing happens in it.)

I've got friends in the WGA that are on the proverbial picket line. Wish I could do more to support them than just rooting them on and hoping their reasonable demands are met.

What you can do, if you're a Netflix subscriber, is stop using Netflix as their wording in the negotiations makes the company sound like they think they'll be fine with just their catalog up and no new content.

Just to respond to this, don’t do anything that isn’t asked of by the WGA themselves. Boycotts only really work if there’s an intention in mind with it and not watching stuff, as weird as that might sound, might give the message of royalties not being handed out because nobody’s watching the work in question. The only two requests the WGA have are that if you are in LA or New York, you can join picket lines to support the strikers and that you go on social media with #DoTheWriteThing. Anything else is making assumptions that the strikers might not want.

Well, let’s just hope nobody has any criticisms of any lines in the script or people feel things should go in a different direction because they’d be violating union guidelines and make this whole thing worse. A good thing to have hovering on any production.

Fair enough. And I admit to going all over the place when I feel anxious.
But this half still holds true...

I am not a Hollywood writer and am in no way connecting any work I've done with the caliber of what WGA members do.
However, on a freelance basis, I've written for a company that does a pretty frequent turnover of podcasts. I used to regularly write podcasts scripts for them but the work dried up last year. This didn't bother me because I'd started a new full-time job and wasn't relying on the money.
Last month, I heard from this company for the first time since last June. They asked me to look over some podcast scripts they'd written with ChatGPT and correct them so they'd sound more natural. In the past, I'd have written those scripts from scratch and been paid three times as much as they were offering for me to edit them.
The scripts were technically fine. They hit all of the points and had perfect spelling and grammar. But trust me when I say they were soulless. It wasn't the way people speak to each other at all. If you think dialogue is bad now, dialogue fueled by AI will be a million times worse.
I hope the writers get the money they want and also get the safeguards against AI they're that looking for as well.

I am openly against AI but I was curious one night so I prompted one to write a story scene for me. It was the most generic thing I've ever read. No emotion or charm to it at all.

Question because I feel like I'm right but I can't find anything to back me up so someone fact check me
The last time we had a writers strike, didn't we have a random season of Big Brother or Survivor or something along those lines? I remember someone airing/launching off schedule because of this

Yay more reality crap clogging the channels.
Doubt I get effected much. there is like 2 modern shows I watcch. One is ending soon.
Anyone remember how long the strike in the early 80s was? I got foggy memories of wondering why shows were airing so many reruns. But I was 8 to 10 IIRC when it happened.

Heroes tanked, Chuck's first season lost all momentum (luckily it ran for 5 seasons), and Bones had to wrap up the Gormogon arc and boy was it terrible. It also thankfully stopped the second season of Friday Night Lights.
