Being born in 1975, grandparents seemed like the traditional, older white haired senior citizens. that still kept busy and dressed up, had their hair done every week etc.
Now my generation are becoming grandparents and well it's certainly not the same.
Fast forward to the next generation and I'm not knocking anyone's choices, but I don't see anyone gaining a sense of decorum that they don't have now.
I obviously didn't know my Grandmother when she was a teenager, which was roughly in the mid to late 30s, but I think she was already on the wat to being the woman I knew growing up.
Now we've had those that have lived through the Jerry Springer, hair metal, Married... With Children, social media, everyone has a tattoo era, so what might they be like when they reach retirement age?

I saw a social media post once that proposed the next-gen nursing home residents will spend their afternoons playing Dungeons and Dragons. I really hope that turns out to be true.

Get off my lawn with that classical flute revival stuff, play some real music like the Island Boys.

Few and far between, from the look of things. Pretty much this. Either as a result of millennials and zoomers not being able to afford to have children, or having to work so long that they f*** off and die from stress before their kids have any.

I got a vasectomy when I was 33 because I have a lot of mental health issues and I just didn't even want to deal with the risk of an accident. I have like 3 friends who have children (and they're all very good parents, make no mistake) and the rest of us don't have any and don't want any.

I plan on destroying my great grand nieces and nephews in Smash Brothers and Starcraft.
When I lose my hand-eye coordination I'll move onto turned based games and nuke them to shit in Civ.

I'll still be sticking with single player games but presumably squinting at them and playing on "story" difficulty

On average gen X are in worse health than boomers at the same age and it'll get even worse with millennials (gen z might reverse the trend). Even those that do get to get to be grandparents for a decent time will probably have less to offer in terms of time, money or energy. Again on average. I'm not sure how my parents would have coped without my grandparents assistance in various ways. On the bright side they're more likely to accept their grandkids as they are.

My Nana really amazed me. She's going to be 88. My cousin is trans and she's always been nothing but loving and supportive. When I told her I was getting a vasectomy, she was the only person who didn't give me the "are you sure?" spiel and just said "good". She even drove me to the hospital and brought me to McDonald's after 😂

Kudos to the OP for even thinking there will be a world by the time these folks reach retirement age. Some days I'm not so sure...

So somewhere my parents have a letter from Mother Teresa (or at least her helpers) telling my grandma, in a nice way, to be less racist. My wife's great grandma was a very hardcore conservative Christian, a pastor's wife. My wife's cousin was having a wedding, which was entirely secular and Halloween themed. However, her great grandma had softened a bit in her 90s, and rather than complain to anyone she simply turned off her hearing aid.

However, her great grandma had softened a bit in her 90s, and rather than complain to anyone she simply turned off her hearing aid. My maternal grandmother, despite being from an immigrant family herself, is wildly racist/xenophobic (and other things). It's actually difficult to work out which races and nationalities she's alright with and at what point someone becomes too foreign for her, and she's always revealing new prejudices. It's actually a bit scary, she's probably keen for me to be in a relationship, but I worry how she would react if my relationship was with a woman who wasn't white, which is a real possibility. Interestingly for someone incredibly fearful of Middle Eastern people, she's very keen on Jesus.
Weirdly, my paternal grandmother grew up in the 1930s and 1940s in a part of Africa literally reserved exclusively for white people, but was pretty accepting and tolerant and empathetic towards other races, migrants, refugees, whoever, especially for someone of her age and background. It's interesting how that worked out.
