I thought what I was going through was a mild case of constipation, but after going through various ways to try to get normal, solid "waste" through (when it comes out, it's much softer), the doctor suggested a colonoscopy for me, and I'll be getting on next week. Anyone else here have one, and if so, what to expect?

The night before sucks. Just about the only thing you can eat is Jello, and you’ll have to drink a colon blow powder and run to the toilet every 5 minutes.

Yeah, procedure is no big deal. You'll be out for it.
Take off at least a half day before as you're gonna be drinking Miralax and looking like Jeff Daniels in Dumb and Dumber for hours.

Ok, yeah, I had one a few years back. The procedure itself is pretty routine. They put you under and you wake up fifteen minutes later and don't even know it happened. The main thing is you have to fast the day before, and for a stress eater like me that wasn't easy. Even worse is the laxative they give you to take. They gave me something called "Moviprep". It tastes ok, but it has a very weird texture to it so it feels like you're drinking human phlegm. And you have to drink a LOT of it. Like more then you ever thought possible. And once it kicks in you will not stop pooping anytime soon. Even when you think you have no poop left to give, your body will still find a way to discharge something. My suggestion is you pick a spot you're planning to hang out in that night (your couch, your bed, whatever) and line the floors from that spot to the toilet with towels. Old towels that you're not going to mind throwing out the next day.
Otherwise, have fun.

Like others have said the prep is worse than the actual procedure. I don’t know if they do it for everyone but for me I had a strict schedule and corresponding list of what foods I could eat. My big meal for the day was a single pack of chicken ramen and that was pretty early in the day. After that my meals for the rest of the day comprised of chicken broth and gelatin. Also you can’t eat anything with like red food coloring/dye because they don’t want to mistake any of that for actual blood or swelling/redness. Needless to say the following day once the grogginess wore off post-procedure, I had a nice big meal.

I've had several. Even the day before wasn't too bad. The prep stuff I mixed with Gatorade tasted like I was drinking plastic, so that wasn't fun and for me anyway, I was never in danger of not making it to the bathroom in time or anything, you just go more than usual.
For fun, you can watch some youtube videos of comedians talking about it, but they just turn the experience up to 11. Don't let it freak you out.

They aren't as rough as they used to be.
Just don't do something stupid and eat something a little too hard to digest before you take your Super-Shit-Your-Pants-5000 to clean our your pooper. I went to a fireman's steak fry about an hour before I started taking my diarrhea dose. Non digested $2 steak blasting out the old poop chute isn't anything I want to deal with again.

I remember my father having to take the laxatives. The look on his face as he mixed them. He told me afterwards “It wasn’t the flavor. It was the ‘GET THE HELL OUT OF MY WAY!!!’ effect.”

Anyone else here have one, and if so, what to expect? Had one last November and posted about it. See below. --- This is about one of the more unpleasant medical screenings, the colonoscopy. Yesterday I had my first, which I should have had 4 years ago given my family history. In the U.S. they are advising screenings now at 45 years of age, not 50. And I have to say, the dreaded prep was not that bad. I think there's more mythology than reality to what I've had related to me about it. My process: Saturday night, I mixed my prep. Into the pitcher went 64 ounces of Gatorade Zero grape flavor with the complete small container of Miralax and back into the fridge it went. Fun fact: that small container represented 2 weeks worth of once-a-day laxative. So if you do the math, 14 days compressed into 12 hours. Yup, it was like that. Sunday morning, by 11 a.m. I was to have eaten breakfast. I chose 2 scrambled eggs. There were other options, like 1 pancake and syrup, but I decided to go for protein. That was it for solid food, save for hard candies until 5 p.m.. I could also have non-red Jello which I did. Lime isn't bad at all. Between breakfast and lunch, I drank 4 bottles of water. This was not part of the prescribed prep but they did urge proper hydration. Sunday at noonish, I had a can of low-sodium chicken broth, followed in mid afternoon with some Jello. Between lunch and dinner, I drank 4 more bottles of water, which brought me to a gallon. Yeah, I was pissing like a racehorse. Sunday late afternoon, I had another can of low-sodium chicken broth and that was it. Sunday at 5 p.m., 3 Dulcolax tablets with water. Then Sunday at 7 p.m. drink the first 32 ounces of my prep, 8 ounces at a time every 10 minutes. Monday around 1-1:30 a.m., drink the remaining 32 ounces of prep. As for the whole bathroom experience side of things, after the first couple of "drop-offs," things (no pun intended) went rather smoothly. I managed a bit of sleep between Sunday night and Monday a.m. but knew I'd make up for it at the surgical center when the anaesthesia hit. Good news is, I've no problems down in the plumbing and I'm good for 5 years. So it's kinda like jury duty in that way. So ladies and gents of FAN, if you're 45 or older and haven't gotten screened, please consider doing so. Early detection of any problems is best. |

I just got back from one, and despite the anastehesia not really working ( I was pretty much awake or at least aware for the whole procedure), nothing was found, which is good, again, prep day was worse with the dietary restrictions (and I dont think I'm in the mood for gatorade again anytime soon).

In your experience, what should I be expecting, in terms of sensation. Or, emotions.
Is there anything I can do to make it more pleasurable for me or for Dr. Shandri. My main concern is should I have a safe word?

I have one Saturday week. Now I'm able to walk again there is a whole battery of tests awaiting me that were put off, beginning with this one. So the Friday before that will be tremendous fun. The stuff they give you and the effect is what it is, the bit I hate is the 24 hours of fasting beforehand. I'll have to check my blood sugar every 2 hours or so and ensure I have some orange juice to hand if I crash, being a diabetic. I'll have to come off the Apixaban 3 days before
You generally have the option of an anaesthetic (gas as I recall), which I am not partaking in as I have no relatives able to give me a lift back from the hospital, so I'll be walking. It's basically 15 minutes of being uncomfortable, longer if they remove any polyps (if they find any).
