I was just thinking about this. In previous decades, the past decade seems far away, the 90s felt like a world apart from the 80s, ditto the 2000s to the 90s, but the 2010s still seem relatively recent. I wonder if it's because most of the culture of that decade is still relevant in this decade (ie, The MCU, Taylor Swift, the rise of streaming, etc) as opposed to past decades where by the 3 year mark most of what was popular in the past started fading.

Everyone past 2001 seems modern to me still
Maybe because that’s when hd tvs and broadband and phones started getting popular, but everything from that era on still looks rather modern

In many ways yes but I feel the same about much of the 2000s and the 90s were always about 10 years ago.
However at the same time the pre-covid days do seem long ago and from a UK perspective that I can't fully go into the 2012 Olympics seem very distant.

I think music from the last 25 years sounds very similar, after you got past the rough sounding recordings of the 80s and before and the overly produced cheesy sounds from the early 90s. With how they master recordings and produce music, you could take any song from the last twenty five years to a person that wasn't familiar with and they wouldn't be able to tell when it was recorded. Oh course some styles of music stick out a little bit more than others, and feel like theyre stuck in brief five year time period. Like how if you listened to Taylor Swift Look What you Made Me Do and Bad Blood sound kinda dated even though they came out less than ten years ago, that loud electric pop from a few years back, fell quickly out of style. Then I can listen to Wasting Light by Foo Fighters and forget it came out 12 years ago. It's the same with movies. It was the around the same time, a lot of movies stopped looking gritty and cheap. Though in some cases Jurassic Park and Independence Day look better than the CGI heavy films of early 00s. When movies weren't quite ready to fully embrace CGI.

Aside from technology, I haven’t liked this century enough to pay attention to much else, so it’s all a haze really as opposed to anything really distinguishable

I've banged on about this a lot, but I think because pop culture as it used to be kind off stopped in the 2000s, there's not enough to differentiate between the start of the 2010s and the start of the 2020s anymore, everything is stagnant and so it all just feels closer together.

2000 to 2010 seem like they are distanced correctly to me, 2010-2020 get a bit squished together and seem to randomly mesh into each other due to random things that blend into each other randomly (same job from 2007 to 2022 apart from a 6 month redundancy probably helps (2012) do that even though the business moved shop locations five times in that time) where I have to stop and think what year something actually happened and double check if I'm right on when things happened ( I get my dad's triple heart bypass (2013.) and neck op (2014.) mixed up year wise sometimes as they were so close together amongst other life events from 2010-now.).

Somewhat, but not enough time’s passed for all the memorable bits of the 2010s to gel into an easy-to-defineidentity. It’s probably the same way people living in, say, 1985 felt- the 70s were still fresh in everyone’s minds up until around that point when all the neon just exploded.
I definitely know 2000s culture when I see it though. Socialites, garage rock, AFI, T-Pain and the auto tune revolution, the super raw pre Iron Man and Dark Knight comic movie scene, the time Jessica Simpson had that makeup you could eat, MySpace, etc.

Music-wise, 2010 was SUCH an abrupt changing of the guard - so much of the music made that year still feels years ahead of its time. It was one of those massive shifts where it felt like decades happened within a year. Comparatively speaking, the progress and evolution of sounds slowed waaaaay down between 2012 and 2016 (not knocking it, but there wasn't a whole lot made in 2016 that didn't sound like it couldn't have been made in 2011, plus it's unfair to compare anything to how huge of a shift 2010 was in making, say, 2008 sound absolutely ancient by comparison.).
But yeah, on the greater part of pop culture and the arts, it can't be overstated how much COVID and the global shut down impacted everything. People didn't want new, they wanted to feel safe and familiar and have a distraction. I think that fatigue has helped open the door and open the minds of people starting to finally take a chance/enjoy things different than what their limited new offerings were.

Try watching a film from the first half or second half of thw 2000s. Even stuff from the late-2000s like 2007-2009 seem kind of dated now. Maybe it's because I have a good perception of time (in other words, keep track of it), but even when I listen to something from the early-2010s, like a song by LMFAO or "Clarity" by Zedd and Foxes, that definitely makes me think of that time-frame (2011 or 2012).

Yeah, like 'Jennifer's Body' was only 2009 but feels like it was lifetimes removed from today.

About once every two months I'll be browsing games that are on sale on STEAM and I'll be like "Hey, I can get that new Doom game for like 10 bucks" and then I notice it was released in 2016.
I had a lot of major cancer surgery and spent several years in a pain killer haze between surgeries/treatments so 2012ish-2017 is all a blur in terms of my time frame... and then the end of 2019-present day feels like one year for different reasons. So for the most part everything from 2012-now feels like just a couple of years actually passed.

I think the pandemic will help make the 2010s seem further awya than the past few decades have. This. My life pre-Covid does not resemble the current one to the point where I often wonder if the 2010s happened or it was a fever dream I had and I'm living in the real 2010s now.

I couldn't believe that CNN put out "The 2010s" mini-series so quickly. But then I thought... we are into 2023 and the last 3 years have seemed like about 7 or 8, so it makes sense.

I will say this. I often crack up and get annoyed when people refer to the 2000s and include the '10s in it. For example, at the start of 2020, I saw memes online where people mention memes and there was a caption that said "2000-2019: Too soon?" Even I am like, "Don't you realize that those are two decades?" Something tells me that these people are bad at math.

It feels half-new, half-very distant to me. The only thing I remember about the 2010s was me graduating high school, moving out with other family members, TBH.

I feel the opposite: that the pandemic and everything else about 2020 slammed the door shut hard on the 2010’s and made it ancient history almost overnight. It’s hard to describe, but I’ve been feeling much more of a vibe these past several years of, as the phrase goes, “the old world is dead, and a new world is struggling to be born.”
