I suck at retro shoot em ups. What retro shoot em ups are best for people who are beginners to the genre?

Shoot em ups as in FPS? Or as in side scrolling plane/top down shooters? Cause I could give a TON of suggestions for either.

Find one that has a code for infinite lives and just play thru it. There are certain skills that are used in each game of the genre and it just takes time to get them. Playing on free play basically is a fun way to put in the time to learn the skills.
Trying to think of it but there was a Flying Edge made shooter on the Genesis that had a steampunk theme. It had a code that made you take no damage. That would be a good one to start with.

Contra Series 194x Series (41, 42 etc) R-Type Gradius LifeForce Abadox Those are a few retro ones. Most are arcade games that had console releases. The last two were on the NES.

Even I've beaten it (on the 3DS, but it's the same version as the one on Steam).

If you're counting retro-style shmups that aren't actually retro, Jamestown.

Tyrian is a fun top down PC shoot 'em up from the 90s that's been released as open source and ported to just about everything, from the GBA to Zune. I'm terrible at such games, but had a good time with it.

House of the Dead, I'd just go through all three of the originals, they're all a ton of fun imo

Metal Slug series is always a fun time. If we're counting run-and-guns, I don't know if I'd consider MS a "beginner" game. Being from Nazca (ex Irem devs who cut their teeth on the R-Type games, as well as In The Hunt and the Gunforce series), they're (especially the first 2) extremely memorization heavy. As far as Neo-Geo shoot-em-ups go, though, the best one for beginners is probably Alpha Mission II.
