KofiMania, if only for the brotherhood shown by New Day (and the Usos) to support Kofi, as well as the fantastic role reversal for Daniel Bryan as the former underdog turned villain for Kofi to overcome.

Gotta be Foley. As much as I love me Bryan, it’s Foley for me.

Somewhere out in the multiverse the answer to this question is: When Santino the 2011 Rumble and it's aftermath I always wanted a story where someone "undeserving" wins the Rumble. Either a comedy character like Santino, or one of the old-timer nostalgia entrants. Then, lead up to Wrestlemania is Vince telling them they can't main event Wrestlemania because the event will be ruined with a joke main event...but, the winner won't decline his dream match. Vince's hands are tied. So, every week in the lead up Vince schemes to take them out. It gets progressively more malevolent. I guess this is similar to the Daniel Bryan story, but Bryan was actually good. I want more of a no-hoper to finally get the big match.
Anyway...My favorite was underdog story was Kofimania. In era of two world titles, I've always wanted something similar to this. Give a Midcard guy or a legend his shot at glory. As for the question, Daniel Bryan. WWE played the fans perfectly. There's still a contingent who thinks he was misused. And shout to out to Kofi-Mania, where Bryan became everything he fought against.

I think Bryan beats out Foley. Foley needed help from Austin to beat Rock while Bryan beat all of Evolution clean in one night. And to make him even more of an underdog in kayfabe they had him get attacked by HHH after the first match so he went into the main event later that night injured and not only still won but even fought off interference from HHH/Stephanie so it was basically 4 on 1 and he prevailed.

1-2-3 Kid beating Razor Ramon.
And doing it again, with a bum leg, to get Razor's sack of cash he put up.
I like the Foley, Gurrero, Bryan, Kofi, etc, stories just fine, but they were all established stars prior.
Waltman was a (WWF) jobber before he beat Razor, and a made man after. (Ignore the IRS loss at SumSlam '93. Or don't. Mike Rotunda is just that boss.)

Would have actually given them a chance to do something new, make a comedy guy with half decent skill try and prove he is legitimate. Would have been worth a shot. They still would have found a way to ruin it (think Rey getting pinned by Finlay while champion)

They had to be dragged kicking and screaming to that ending. Batista was going to be the big conquering hero over the Authority. Despite nobody not even Batista wanting that. multiple people have stated Bryan was scheduled to have like a rematch with Sheamus up until way late.

There is no way they would have pulled the trigger if WrestleMania wasn’t the next stop. If it was off in the distance, they would have cooled Bryan for sure. It’s only the risk of Mania being hijacked did they go with Bryan.

Mick Foley from Mankind's 97 face turn all the way until winning the WWF title This one imo. Mankind winning the WWF title will always go down as one of the most heartwarming moments in wrestling history.

One that gets overlooked due to memes and whathaveyou, but Virgil vs Ted DiBiase in 1991. It was a great story on 3 PPVS: Virgil finally having enough and turning at the Rumble, Virgil winning by countout at Mania (getting the win but not really beating DiBiase, then finally winning the Million Dollar Belt at Summerslam.
Granted, Virgil didn’t really go anywhere after that but that was a story years in the baking and they played it perfectly.

For me, it's Daniel Bryan. The fact that WWE didn't even seem to want it to happen made it all the better.

Yeah I don’t really agree with the narrative that Bryan wasn’t suppose to be in the main event. I mean Bryan vs Orton again would of been overkill so they needed to add Batista. With the way he was being built up in late 2013/early 2014 there is no way they didn’t have big plans in store for him, especially with the screwy finishes for his previous wwe title runs. I wouldn’t be surprised if the dirt sheets were fed bullshit

ITs Bryan, but as an outside pick how about Jeff Hardy vs Undertaker in a ladder match?
