Weird rating, they had some oddly low numbers last year as well during the summer. The chart showed cable as a whole was down for the night. Hopefully they rebound in the next few weeks.

Does anyone have the numbers from last year's first show after Forbidden Door? Because I feel like if they were down from the previous weeks as well, it might be worth reevaluating Forbidden Door as a PPV.

Obviously just spitballing, but I wonder if it's because for as excellent as Forbidden Door was, there's not a lot of story continuation after a PPV that's mostly dream matches.

I mean it's almost certainly worth the millions of dollars it brings in in terms of live gate and PPV revenue. And I wouldn't view Forbidden Door as any major contributor to their ratings. They had a good number last week.

The Dynamite after Forbidden Door last year was way up from the previous week. Numbers below, Forbidden Door 2022 happened on 6/26/2002 DYNAMITE 6/22 878,000 Total Viewers, .31 demo. #1 on cable DYNAMITE 6/29 1,023,000 Total Viewers, .36 Demo, #1 on cable

It was a weird show that had to deal with a lot of audibles and switches, so it might've just hurt the show's viewership by the end, but if all of cable was down, those weeks just kinda happen and you gotta prepare for them
They hit number 3 in cable despite the year to year drop, which likely says a lot more about live cable viewership than it does about AEW, though they had shown growth a few shows prior year over year... might just be one of those weeks where everything was down then.
This isn't gonna be a great week for AEW ratings I am to assume, because Collision is gonna be taped tonight too. But who knows, if they can keep the demo strong enough, it'll help.

The show that just broke their live gate record needs to be re-evaluated as a PPV? The show that also last week as their go home Dynamite did better year over year than their last show of the same week? I don't think blaming Forbidden Door here is the vibe, I think the card getting whacked by a ton of shifts and last minute changes probably hurt it more than anything else, though as was already said, Cable was down across the board this week so everything takes a hit then.

What were the last minute changes besides Baker being replaced? The Bryan-Mox swap didn’t really affect the flow of the show at all.

I would really contest that it's more on the fact that multiple matches needed to be changed around, stuff like Baker vs Soho turning into a Soho squash and promo, a lot of segments which sometimes can raise a rating but a lot of them can make people switch off, but overall if all of cable was down for like every show, one of those weird weeks, I'm gonna say that's the strongest outlier The show had some pretty good storyline followup even after Forbidden Door, BCC/Elite, Soho added some more to the Baker match, Cole and MJF were great, and Jack Perry had his first heel promo, even Darby/Sting vs Le Sex Gods was an immediate followup to the PPV so... it's not like they didn't give their best to have fallout, and likely would have further if Danielson didn't get hurt.

Multiple wrestlers seemed to be out either due to the game launch, travel issues due to the smoke, or an illness (Slight Spoiler: More wrestlers than Baker and Cole seemed to catch this flu) So it feels like they might've had to do other stuff, a lot of people said the show felt weirder than normal. They still put on a solid show I thought, but even Baker being swapped off for a squash/promo is gonna hurt, the people and viewers love Britt.

Don’t think it was cable being down so much as there not being any big sporting competition. Last week had the College World Series and this week didn’t. Other than that, everything looks fairly similar. The main competition in their timeslot, Real Housewives, even was up from the prior week.

Wasn't last year's show after Forbidden Door Blood & Guts? That seems like a bit of an unfair comparison. That's why I always think year to year comparisons to a specific week are a bit pointless and miss a ton of context. Throw this number into the averages and see what happens over the next few weeks.
