Honestly surprised that no one whooped Paul’s ass in the 90s/00s. I think...I could be wrong...but I think it was known that he had some kind of hookup with the WWF, so that's why they didn't. Also makes me think of someone, maybe Jerry Jarrett?, saying to the boys in Memphis that they'd better not be on the gas, and someone replying that with what he paid them, they were lucky they were on food. 'Dirty' Dutch Mandell is the guy you are thinking of. Yeah, Stevie Richards said that was part of why multiple ECW guys jumped to WCW, since he and others knew to suspect Paul had some connection in the WWF. They thought maybe he just had friends who passed along information maybe, or something like that, so they were less likely to try to get hired by WWF to not cross him, not realizing it was that he was effectively Vince's employee and therefore in no position to deny Vince if he truly wanted a wrestler. Bully Ray said he and D-Von went to Titan Towers when they got hired and were kind of horrified when an elevator opened and Paul Heyman was standing right there, that only then did they realize Vince was paying him.

On the flip side is the story Jim Cornette told about doing a promo with Hercules Hernandez in Mid South where at point Her hit a double biceps pose and said, “That’s 10 Dianobol a day!” Also makes me think of someone, maybe Jerry Jarrett?, saying to the boys in Memphis that they'd better not be on the gas, and someone replying that with what he paid them, they were lucky they were on food. May be apocryphal, particularly since I have my doubts he'd care that much about performance enhancement, though I guess even in the '80s, there was some controversy around steroids and already talk of "roid rage" incidents with athletes. It was Jerry Jarrett, yeah. And Dutch Mantell hit him with the line about not being on food, and Dutch was probably one of the better paid guys on the roster. He probably wouldn’t have cared, but I think it was the time of Vince’s steroid trial, so it wasn’t clear how that was going to go or how far it was going to reach, so I definitely think it was Jerry covering his ass just in case.
