By mid 90s, I hadn't discovered the IWC quite yet, but did read New Wave Wrestling, which gave me a limited insider look including real names. So I decided to piece together real names from this. The results?
When I was writing up a SummerSlam '94 preview for my friends, I mentioned the likes of Larry Luger, Nelson Knight, Samu Anoia AND Fatu Anoia.
Did you ever misunderstand real wrestler names like this?

For a long time, I thought Hulk Hogan's name was Terry Boulder.

For a long time, I thought Hulk Hogan's name was Terry Boulder. I don't think I ever made up any names, but I do specifically remember an Uncle of mine telling me that Hogan's real name was "Terry Hogan" like it was some kind of super-insider secret lol. Wasn't he credited as that in a few films/shows though? I wanna say that's what they listed him as on Thunder in Paradise.

A wrestling mag once said Taker's real name was Marl Calloway.

He was billed as Terry “Hulk” Hogan in Thunder in Paradise and because of owning that VHS as a kid I believed well into the late 90s that that was indeed his legal name.

I remember seeing variations of Triple H's real name as "Jean-Paul Levesque," "Jean-Michael Levesque," and "Jean-Paul Lafayette."

Thanks to him being billed as Cactus Jack Manson early in his career, I assumed that Cactus's real name was Jack Manson.

I remember seeing variations of Triple H's real name as "Jean-Paul Levesque," "Jean-Michael Levesque," and "Jean-Paul Lafayette." I remember some fan site saying that was his name, Jeal-Paul Levesque. Same site claimed Mankind's was Francis Michael Foley, rather than Michael Francis Foley, his actual name. Amusingly, he actually has a story in Have a Nice Day of a woman calling him "Frank" and him initially trying to rationalize it as being short for Francis before admitting to himself that it simply was her not knowing his name.

I'm reminded of the infamous Complete Idiot's Guide To Professional Wrestling, which I think claimed that The Rock's real name was Rocky Melvin.

I used to think Bradshaw/JBL's real name was Brad Shaw. Being a big hockey fan and card collector I thought Brad Shaw a player from the late 80s-early 90s and Bradshaw were related somehow

I used to think Bradshaw/JBL's real name was Brad Shaw. According to JBL the Iron Sheik thought the same. He went to JBL’s Dad and said something like “Mr. Shaw your son is wonderful”.

For a short period of time I thought it was Yoko Zuna. You know, like Yoko Ono's big fat brother.

For years, I doubted that Michael Hickenbottom was Shawn Michaels real name and assumed it must have been an internet joke from the mid 90s that spread so widely that people believe it.

To be fair, at least for me since I was like 11 when I found that out.. it's a pretty insane last name for a kid to hear hahaha.
