Ideally AEW wants to have a Davey Boy Smith moment in that it is classic and sends the fans home beyond satisfied. But as we get closer to the date…I just don’t know what it could be with so little build.
Of course, a show like this doesn’t need to end with a top face coming out victorious. But sometimes the best ending really is that simple. I’d rather them not Clash at the Castle the show’s ending.
MJF/Adam Cole seems like the best bet to be something memorable. But it reminds me of Jericho/Punk at the Mania they fought on. Rather than a big blowoff their feud is just getting started at their biggest event. If this was going to be the one to send fans home happy it would have needed to be 3 months or so further along. It seems like instead it could end like WM 17 with a top face turning heel. Honestly given how organically over this storyline has gotten, even that seems rushed. Plus while it could be a great moment, it seems a little underwhelming to have the biggest moment be a mid-feud swerve.
Now for some fantasy booking! Let me put the disclaimer that I know at this point it is WAY too late for any of this to play out properly and end at Wembley.
What I wish would’ve happened was that the Bucks/Omega and the Punk camp could have talked turkey earlier. With Punk revealing his real world’s championship earlier, Omega could’ve been the one to cut him off. Even without the drama, Punk/Omega is a dream match. Position Punk as the clear heel and Omega as the clear face. Punk has his supporters but since a good percentage of the fans are going to boo him no matter what, play into that.
You could even tie it into the event locally by Omega saying he’ll refuse to acknowledge Punk as the champ, but will take the title and turn it into the AEW British Commonwealth Championship. Although this creates another title (AEW has too many already) this has some benefits. Omega is from Canada which is part of the Commonwealth so while he’s far from proper British it gives the fans a further reason to cheer him. Then since it’s a Commonwealth title rather than just a UK belt it gives fans the hope that this belt may actually have a shelf life beyond this event. Lastly, since admittedly it is kind of a goofy idea it gives Omega a reason to play up a little goofy comedy. The juxtaposition of Punk being a serious dick with that last point could up the entertainment factor.
That’s all just fantasy booking though and it’s way too late for any of that. AEW has already pulled off a major accomplishment drawing roughly 80,000 fans to Wembley. I’m hoping the best moment reaches WWF in 1992 height and we don’t have anything close to ROH botching their Madison Square Garden appearance.
