I mean just looking at this from the perspective of Kayfabe and wrestling's history, Roman Reigns current title run in all aspects aside from length is EXTREMELY pathetic. His Kayfabe Rap sheet is as follows:
-Wins the title in a triple threat match against The Fiend and Braun Strowman which he joins at the very end when both of them are hardly able to continue. He also wins the title without pinning the champion, and The Fiend never gets a rematch.
-His first title defense is against Jey Uso who at the time was a midcard tag wrestler who has never had any type of singles career. He has to resort to a low blow to turn the match around in order to win.
-His second title defense is a rare clean win against a main eventer in Braun Strowman.
-Rematch against Jey Uso in an I Quit Hell in a Cell Match. Is unable to force Jey to quit until he uses Jimmy as a hostage.
-In a TLC match against Kevin Owens, Owens had him dead to rights if not for interference from Jey Uso.
-In the Steel Cage Rematch, Kevin Owens again had him dead to rights if not for Jey Uso cuffing him to the cage.
-In a Last Man Standing Rematch Kevin Owens had him dead to rights once again if not for the interference of Paul Heyman uncuffing Roman.
-Defeats Daniel Bryan after Bryan had just competed in the Elimination Chamber moments ago.
-In a rematch, Daniel Bryan had Roman dead to rights forcing him to tap out to the Yes-Lock if not for the referee being unconscious. Proceeds to win solely because Daniel Bryan was assaulted by Edge.
-In a Triple threat match also involving Daniel Bryan, Edge had Roman dead to rights with a conchairto if not for the interference of Jey Uso.
-Scores a clean win over Daniel Bryan in a title Vs. career match in a rare clean win over a main eventer.
-Scores a clean win over Cesaro, who was a career long midcard wrestler.
-Scores a Clean win against Rey Mysterio, who hadn't been a serious world title contender in WWE for about 10 years.
-In a singles Rematch with Edge, he wins due to large amounts of interference from the Usos and Seth Rollins. Edge had Roman dead to rights if not for a ref bump.
-Scores a clean win over John Cena, in a rare clean win over a main eventer
-Defeats Finn Balor who is not a consistent main eventer using a low blow.
-In an Extreme Rules rematch with Finn Balor as the Demon in Extreme Rules, The Demon had him dead to rights, if not for the interference of the Usos, and once again if not for the top rope breaking.
-Defeats Brock Lesnar due to interference from the Usos and the use of the Universal Title belt. Brock had him dead to rights, if not for a ref bump.
-Defeats Sami Zayn after Sami is assaulted by Brock Lesnar.
-DQ loss to Seth Rollins.
-Scores a clean win over Goldberg, who was 5-5 in his last 10.
-In a title unification match with Brock Lesnar, uses a low blow and the Universal title to turn the tide and win.
-Does not the defend the title for 2 1/2 months.
-Scores a clean win over Riddle who is a midcarder, and mostly a tag competitor prior to that.
-In a Last Man Standing Match Brock Lesnar had him dead to rights with an F-5 through the commentary desk if not for interference from the Usos and a distraction by Paul Heyman.
-Drew McIntyre had him dead to rights at Clash at the Castle if not for interference from Solo Sikoa
-Does not defend the title for 2 months after this.
-In a match with Logan Paul (a celebrity with 2 matches against midcard wrestlers) finds himself in serious trouble, and wins based on a large distraction by the Usos and Solo Sikoa.
-Does not the defend the belt for 2 months following this.
-In a fourth title match against Kevin Owens, Kevin Owens had him dead to rights if not for a ref bump.
-In a title defense against Sami Zayn, Zayn had him dead to rights multiple times if not for ref bumps and interference. Roman won off a distraction by Jey and the use of a steel chair.
-In a Title defense against Cody Rhodes, Cody had him dead to rights if not for interference from Solo Sikoa. The match also featured heavy interference through out.
-Does not defend the title for 4 months.
-In a Tribal Combat match with Jey Uso, Jey had in him dead to rights in spite of the fact it was 2 on 1 for about the last 10 minutes of the match and would have won if not for interference from Jimmy Uso.
-In a title defense against upper-midcarder LA Knight, he was beaten dead to rights if not for interference by Jimmy Uso placing his foot on the rope. Benefited from earlier distractions by Jimmy, Solo, and Heyman
To review that is: 3 clean wins over legitimate main event stars (6 total), 15 title defenses in which he was beaten dead to rights if not for shenanigans, LONG periods of not defending the title, and a near loss to a celebrity.
It's bizarre to see a title reign go for this long, and genuinely feel in Kayfabe like he's only stayed champ this long through sheer dumb luck, but here we are.
